Uneven wear on rear tyres

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have fairly recently purchased a 2010 Octavia vRS diesel, I have noticed that I am getting horrendously bad inner wear on the rear tyres. When putting my car in for it's first service last week I advised of this, two new rear suspension arms were fitted under warranty however apparently Skoda UK will not entertain any chat on tyre compensation. They advised that it is down to the tyre manufacturer but I know they certainly won't compensate any! Has anyone had any joy with Skoda on this fault? Or is it a case of replace the tyres and sort it myself?

Also, anyone recommend a good type of tyre to fit on this model? Skoda themselves, not in so many words, said the Dunlop Sport Maxx are a pile of crap and advised me to 'seek advice' on the type of tyres that are fitted.

Worried this car is going to turn into a tyre burning machine! I already had to replace the fronts at 14,000 miles! (was an ex-demonstrator tho)

Any experiences would be of great help

thanks

Michelin Sport PS3 are well regarded and I just fitted them myself, they also have a reputation for lasting pretty well. The noise is much reduced and they certainly feel excellent, but of course new tyres usually do. Many threads on here advise geometry checks too as it seems that these cars are not necessarily accurately set up at the factory, yes I find that odd and surprising. Try to to get a recommendation for a place that does the geometry, the success depends on the skill and experience of the person doing it.

There is a lot of dialogue on this forum with regard to the geometry set-up of the rear suspension leading to premature wear of the rear tyres. Some people (not many though) have had some joy with their dealer with regard to new tyres.

However your case sounds different, in that the dealer has actually fitted new parts to correct the problem and therefore effectively admitted that this was the cause of the tyre wear. I would like to think that they would at least contribute to the price of the tyres.

I fitted Michelin PS3s to mine. These are asymmetric whereas the Dunlops (I actually typed Dunplops at first which is probably quite appropriate ) are directional, and this seems to help.

14,000 miles for a set of fronts is not out of the ordinary, especially if they were Dunlops.

Elbog, where are you based?

Did anyone get any joy from Dunlop? as they seem to be the tyre manufacture that skoda UK are blaming for this.

Think you done well to get 14,000 miles , my sport maxxs done 8,500 from new on mine ,,

I wonder what criteria Skoda chose Dunlop as OE?

They are cheap.

It was the most dissappointing part of our purchase process to find that our VRS TSI and 1.8 TSI L&K were fitted with Dunlops and Bridgestone.

Compared to Contis or the superb Michelin PS3s they are ****.

The Dunlops particularly "chunk up" during the wearing and create that wow, wow, wow, on the rear. The Bridgestone RE050 were just too poor traction ie only A rating rather than AA and spun up to easy.

Mich PS3 are also good value if you are gonig to keep the car over 15k miles or more.

Who do VAG use on the R18, Veyron etc?

Michelin if course.
