window tints

Featured Replies

hi guys,

some good news hopefully collect my car next friday. should be delivered start of next week then get ready and tints done on it.

question is, i have never modified a car since my first 106 which was only alloys and lights.

anyway i am going to get tints done on the car and wondered what the options are? car is white that i am getting. i am unsure of the terminology to tell them what i want. i dont want blacked out completely but would like it quite dark so it was noticeable it was tinted at the back.

the other thing is, am i right in saying the front windows cant be done and only rear windows? does anyone have any example pics of different style tints on their cars and could tell me what that style is called?

thanks again guys

Windscreen and Front side windows can be tinted but must allow a minimum amount of light through.

A quick google suggests a minimum of 75% light through the windscreen and 70% through the front side windows, but you may want to check that further.

thanks, the dealer said on the phone today he could only do the rears, so need to ask him again then.

cheers

The front windows are usually already at the maximum tint, and most reputable window tinters will not touch them as its them the police will come down on.

thanks, i will get the rears done then.

just need to know the options now.

found this site:

http://www.phantomtinting.com/tint-shades.html

is this the options all tinting companies will have? just so i know what i can tell them what i want.

thanks

Dark Smoke on mine Mr H. Side windows at the back + the rear window, and a small 'sunband' along the top of the windscreen too.

thanks guys, i like them. i think i will say to go for the dark smoke likes your oobster. i will say to them about it today.

oobster i was told mine is not coming with front mud flaps at all. where did you order your mud flaps from for front and rear?

thanks again

They don't come from the factory with the mudflaps Mr H, the dealer fitted my front ones after I bought the car but before I picked the car up.

The front ones are 'standard' - i.e. they fit all MK2 Octavias. The dealer refused to fit the rear ones, as they said there isn't a mudflap available for the rear of a VRS and the 'standard' rear ones wouldn't fit. I had read on here that they would fit, so asked the dealer to supply them and I would fit them myself.

I did then fit them myself, which took my around an hour and a half. Almost all of that was jacking the car up and removing the rear wheels - the actual fitting of the mudflaps only took a few minutes.

ok thanks mate.

another couple of questions mate if you dont mind?

i am going to say to dealer to make sure service is set to variable for collecting is this right?

the locks on the skoda courtesy car i have just now, i press it once and it unlocks the front door but i have to press again for all doors however i feel it does not actually unlock and have to keep pressing. is this the same on the vrs? should i ask them to change its setting to unlock on one click?

also is it just a standard SD card that the system takes for music?

how much for the mud flaps?

thanks again

Mr H

I am not the first owner of my VRS so I am maybe not the best person to advise regarding picking up a brand new one. I know my car is set to variable servicing, and from what I understand from reading other posts on here it seems that variable servicing is the most popular choice.

The locking on my car is the same - one press of the keyfob for unlocking the drivers door and another push to unlock all the doors. I don't know for certain, but I believe there is something that can be done to make it one push unlocks all doors. I prefer it the way it is though, mainly because I am normally the only occupant of my car. There is also (again I am not 100% sure on this) another option you can get where once you are driving off the car locks itself so that no-one can open your doors if your stopped at traffic lights etc and knick stuff off your passenger/back seats (anti-hijack I think it's called). I would have thought the dealer could program both of these options to your liking before you pick the car up. If not there should be someone reasonably local to you with the software and lead that you can use to make small changes to your car like this.

Regarding the slot in the head unit for music - no idea mate, never used it and never likely to - I have an iPod connected to my head unit so no need to use the card slot.

The mudflaps are only around £20-25 a set - Chathams in Edinburgh supplied both front and rear sets for me free of charge and also fitted the front ones for me too. Do a search on here, there are quite a few threads regarding mudflaps on the MK2 VRS! Part numbers start with KEA (I think).

thanks for your help guys, just a quick one. the tints at that price 160. that will be good tints, i.e. do they tint the glass or is it like the cheap film you see boy racers putting on their cars?

thanks again

All aftermarket tints are a film installed on the glass, it's the quality of the film and the skill of the installer that makes the difference. I'm not sure if £160 for rear only tint sounds a little cheap or not; I paid nearly £300 for the tint on the rear doors and tailgate plus the clear UV security film on the front doors. I could have probably shopped around and got it cheaper, but I was very impressed with the knowledge of the guy who does the work, and decided you get what you pay for. Here's a link to the company's site that describes the installation process.

As Shrikep said, it will be a film - I paid £170 from the guy in Uphall (Andrew at Magma) to get my windows tinted from the B-pillar back, and a small sunstrip along the top of the windscreen. I've been using Andrew for years, all he does is window tinting (i.e. it's his only source of income) so he's got to be good at it (plus I wouldn't use him if he wasn't).

thanks guys, so you think they should be of good quality oobster? dealer has quoted me that price so guess it should be a good job or just make them look bad.

i have read on here though on another post someone mentioning about using the heated screen with the tints can damage it?

i have never tinted a car before and i am just a bit nervous getting the brand new car with this done if it turns out to look rubbish for that price.

does that seem the norm for up here in scotland then 160 for a decent job?

cheers

Hi, that price doesn't seem too bad, I paid £120 for the 3 rear windows, mine was brand new too and was chuffed with the difference it made, got dark smoke I think and it made the car especially in candy white, you won't be disappointed.

thanks mate so is the film applied to the inside and is it long lasting? will it be ok to use heated windscreen?

thanks again

Yes it's applied to the inside and i've NEVER had any issues when using the rear window heater thing. If you've got kids then I think you'd need to be careful of their toys etc scratching the film though.

One thing you do need to be aware of - the film can look slightly 'milky' sometimes just after it's been applied - this goes away within 2-3 days once it's dried out fully.

  • Author

thanks oobster, yeah i do have a kid so will need to watch out for this then.

thanks for the heads up.

They might tell you but, just incase, don't put your windows down for a few days either until its fully dried out.
