FABIA VRS - please help :-/

Featured Replies

Hi one and all :0)

I have recently purchased a Fabia VRS 55 plate with 80k on the clock. This car has full history, new turbo at 27k, cambelt recently done and unluckily enough for me a recent new head gasket! We haven't had the best start, lol

No I have a high pitched whine coming from the engine whilst reving when static and through gears 2 and 3 from what I can hear. Noise is between 2.5 & 3k rpm. It will also whine whilst decelerating although this is only on occasion. Could this be turbo related? :-/

I need a new bottom boost pipe which will be fitted next week. I don't think this is the issue though?

Any advice would be appreciated, good or bad I'll have to take it on the chin. Very gutted as been l have been after a VRS for years.

Thank you! I'll try upload a video

Does it do it in neutral? almost sounds like a flywheel but id be massively surprised at that mileage

If car not moving and whine can be altered in pitch with engine running by revving, I am thinking Turbo bearing or such. (Sorry)

Maybe first motion/ input shaft in gear-box would be my second best guess.

Just hang-on and someone is gonna give you some hope/ cure.

Do you get good acceleration when slamming gas pedal down ??

Its just the turbo spooling... Nothing to worry about mate.

First of all, thanks for the quick response!

When static and in neutral it will whine when I rev it to around 2.5k and will continue only for a short second up to 3krpm. The higher the rev the higher the pitch.

It's pretty load to be honest peeps, I'll try get a vid up asap. I hope it'd not game over for the turbo, fingers crossed

lol there you go ! problem solved :D

How loud is the noise ?

Overly loud ?

Or just audible above the engine noise ?

If it is turbo spooling it will whine when accelerating but should quieten down if you were to hold the revs steady.

Ian.

It can get almost ear bleedingly loud, I used to have a ford racing pumma whuch was renowned fir squeaky breaks, sounds just like this.

The screech goes if held revs countryboy, is this good or bad. Once over the 3k turbo is fine and boost is present. I'm gunna get the boost pipe fitted tomorrow as this may have something to do with it. Could it be to do with auxiliary belts maybe?? Longshot?

I would go with turbo gone

Feck! :0/

Could agree with this one, doesn't sound like what I originally thought it would.

Sounds like it's been starved of oil

Out driving this morning and The car is now in the garage as it sounds like a tank and isn't drivable. The Exhaust gas cooler pipe needs replacing. Hopefully this was the issue. It just recently had an oil change 0W 30 so shouldn't be oil issue?

Hopefully I'll get it back all sorted :0)

thats the wrong oil!! COULD BE THE ISSUE LOL

My bad, it was Casterol 5w 40 oil that was used.

  • 1 month later...

I've PM'd Rex to ask if the problem he had was his turbo or something else so I am awaiting his response.

However, do any of you guys have any idea if the noise in his Youtube video is the turbo starting to fail?

Mine has started doing the same thing. It only does it when the car is cold.

Once the car is warmed up, the turbo just makes the normal whistling noise when the spinning up. Before the car warms up, I get a similar noise to the one in the video that is more a whine than a whistle.

I'm thinking that the turbo bearings may be starting to go and the nosie is the turbo impellers starting to just touch the turbo housing.

Car has only just passed 40k miles, I'm 2nd owner, full service history, it's standard and hasn't been ragged. The car does mostly journeys to work which is 10 mile so gets fully warmed up rather than doing lots of short journeys. I was hoping for a lot more miles before turbo issues started!!!

A place near where I live can get a brand new Garett for £495 + VAT and they use a garage close by to fit for about £200.

The turbo place said that they think the standard KKK turbos aren't too good due to shaft failures (as people have discussed on here before). When the guy was on a KKK training course he asked for their comment on their TDI 130 turbo compared to Garetts. Their answer was that does he want to sell turbos or not. That says a lot don't you think?

My turbo has always had a little whine when first started up. Bin like this now for 40k only does it for first couple of mins. Just dont drive it hard untill properly warmed up

Cheers for the info. Maybe it will keep going for a bit longer then.

It's not whined at startup before at least not that I've noticed.

Performance seems fine and there's no more smoke than normal plus it's black so diesel being burnt and not oil smoke which is white.

I'll just have to keep the radio off for a couple of weeks and make sure it doesn't get any worse.
