Best Superb for around £6-7K

Featured Replies

Hi, I may be looking to get another Superb in the next couple of weeks and would like to know what the best spec / model I could get for 6-7K. Ideally no older than a 05 plate and must be diesel.

Any comments welcome.

Cheers,

Chris

Stick with the same 1.9 tdi engine in 130bhp form and manual 'box, maybe find a nice Elegance or Edition 100 if you like your toys.

Ideal car would be an unmolested 1.9 Edition 100, by far the best of the Mk1 Superbs IMO. Second choice would be a 1.9 Elegance. Happy hunting.

If you can live with black then it must be the Edition 100, if not then either a Elegance or a L&K but make sure it is the 1.9PD with a manual box and avoid the 2.0 like the plague! (not sure if the L&K was available with the 1.9?)

You won't get an L&K for that money, last one I saw was 07 and £13k, a 70k Elegance should be attainable, but avoid that 2.0 engine, even a 2.5 is a better long term bet, what you save on fuel you will spend on a new engine, if you should get a 2.0 PD then have the oil flushed and changed and do it asap as there is a suspicion that LL servicing blocks the pick up tube and enhances wear on the weak oil pump spline, the fact that some have done 145k+ says there is a method to avoid the dreaded fail, and switch to 9k changes on 505.01 unless you have the dpf model, then it's 507, but I'd still kill the time period rather than relying on a sensor.

Ah, interesting - what is wrong with the 2.0?

Cheers,

Chris.

Oil pump drive failures - oil pressure loss, so you lose the turbo, big end bearings too. Many thousands of pounds to fix.

Depends on what speed you was doing...wife was only doing 20mph when oil pump failed....still lost the bottom engine when bearing went...top end we cudnt be sure of but turbo was ok...still cost a few grand tho....but what a different car it was when replaced sigh

Let go of it Andy, it was an expensive lemon, one that VW should've squeezed.

Chris, are you the same Chris I tested your blue car a few years ago when the dealer left the dash not right and you had the tyre noise?

Yes, its me!

Yes, its me!

How things change eh, at the time I wasn't too happy I'd bought one, but mine gave three years service as a cab and cost only an Alternator and a battery in cost terms, did a couple of CV boots and a coolant sensor, but everything else was service items, and I grew to really like the car, I think with yours that noise was just tyre noise tbh, and the radio surround wasn't clipped back in properly, I avoided the dealers and sure enough as I learned more of the car I was able to see it for the car it was, I got Peter Cooper to do the cambelt, they were not only cheaper but better fitter's in my opinion and more experienced due to the Passat vs Superb thing, i.e a Skoda garage only saw a handfull of Superb's where the VW one would be doing loads, practice makes perfect, I'm a VW man now, I had to get a newer car last year and I always wanted a B6, but on the way to get it I nearly changed my mind and turned around, it was only I'd stripped the car out by then that made me go through with it.

Hi Ian,

I still have the same Superb. Done 82K now. Last week the belt that drives the alt and power steering went - well, the bearing in the pully went - in Asda car park in Havant - Jesus, had to drive back home - would have helped to be bionic!

Need to get it sorted in the next few days when i find time - any ideas where to get good quote?

The noise from the wheels that you experienced turned out to be a wheel bearing which was replaced under waranty.

Other than being keyed again by a useless eater, the car is fine, but I fancy getting a different one.

Is the 2.0 that bad? I have seen them with 1OOK plus on the clock - all been fleet cars reguarly serviced. Do you think a service every 6-7K would mitigate any risk?

Cheers

PS - what you driving now?

I saw that, it was a couple of years back wasn't it, I seem to remember dropping round your way and thinking oh great the key gang has been at it again.

I'm in a Passat now, the Skoda made really good PX money so it was too good to turn down.

Go to Copnor Bridge, there is an alley just before you get to the Mr Clutch place, used to be old cars parked on the entrance if you can remember that, go right to the end, turn left and the right hand unit at the bottom think it's Unit 11, ask for Ady and tell him Ian the cabby sent you in, helps to have the part with you as well, saves him time getting one, just go to GSF on the Eastern Road and get one there, it will be oem quality at half the price and in stock, he's been a spanner 30 years now and very good at it as well.

Avoid the 2.0, there was a nice Aqua car Superb in met red, 56 plate, he's got rid of now but it happened to him and he's middle aged and gentle with cars, I was in a mess with the Passat as it has the same engine in it with another code name, lucky for me they modded it and mine is a later one so hopefully it won't happen to mine, but I wouldn't buy one in a Superb, I think they all got the old stock engines and likely to fail, if you do get one, change the oil every 10k, there is a rumour flooating about that LL services and the pick up pipe blocking helps the pump to fail.

What would happen if one put a series of small holes in the fine mesh that is connected to the oil pick up pipe? Surely that would end the possibility of the gauze clogging up thus causing further damage through lack of oil passing through it, and as supurbia states, one of the problems is why the oil pumps fail.

It sure was an expensive lemon supurbia, but one cant help thinking if certain modifications would cure the problem the 2.0 tdi engine had!! I know the superb has built in problems, like water ingress and the love of front tyres, but when it was running properly it was a great car to drive. Big and imposing to drive and looked the business too, and was more than capable of cruising at over a ton where the law permits :giggle: . Y es the car has now gone, but i cant help think that somewhere along the line maybe i should of given it a few more tweaks and done certain things to eliminate the chances of it happening again. Guess i'll never know now, but its a pain seeing it up for sale looking like brand new, with a brand new engine and a brand new mot...makes you want to yell !!

The car itself I thought was one of the best I've owned, it always felt like a MK2 Granada in a way to me, much more than a Passat much less cost than a badge executive car, the oil thing I can't say for sure, but knowing what I know, if I had one that had done less than 40k, it would get 9k oil changes and flushed each time to help stop the flow slowing down, when you think about it, a 2.0 could effectively go 22k without a change, so that's 22k of combustion rubbish clogging the strainer and filter, and if you look at the muck that comes out of the pipe at the back when you hoof it, it says it's a dirty engine anyway.

Where is yours now, I've looked on A/T for it but I can't find it.

It's there in a/t suppy....type in the boxes black superb...manual.....comfort...8-9k

I think the little boxes on start up whittles it down

Forgot to add...its being sold by a dealer, but not a suk one

MMJ ?

Can you PM me what you got for it Andy, I know you won't want to put it up in public, but my curious nature is wondering how much the trade thought it was worth to them as oppossed to the public, tia.
