Top Mount Intercooler?

As title really.. Just wondering, has anyone ever tried fitting a TMIC to a furby to get the advantage of shorter pipes?

Not to mention a REAL, GENUINE reason to fit a bonnet scoop!

Think I might have to get my photoshop on later and see if a furby with a bonnet scoop "works" ;)

nope theres not really the space without raising the bonnet or huge bulge in the bonnet, plus the size you would fit there will prob only handle standard power, i used to have a toyota starlet glanza with the 1.3 turbo and that had a top mount intercooler. going for anymore power though and you need front mount, plus the tdis are a tall engine too, for all the hassle your have to go to not worth it

I would've thought the position up there would've overule any gains in the short piping.

One of the first things people done with the Impreza's, were to move to FMIC.

Wouldn't be that deep either, not much room for one to sit up there :(

Look at the WRC cars, they use not really a top mount but the intercooler is slanted right back about 45 degrees and the air comes in the front through the big mouth bumper and out through the bonnet. Allows you to run a much larger surface intercooler and it have good air flow through it. Means cutting out the front panel and loosing bonnet catch and also big ass bonnet vent, extreme to be sure.

i can second that! the glanza i had with a top mount was terrible! the heat from the engine bay warmed it up a treat! changed to a blitz front mount and that was a HUGE improvement!

i did the rx7 top mount upgrade lol, that was better but i wasnt running big power

Did alot of research into top mount intecoolers a few years ago, even designed and built my own charge cooler system which works very well (not on a Skoda though).....As mentioned top mount intercoolers are a waist of time and effort for the results you`ll achieve...mostly down to heat soak from close proximity to a hot engine. A well designed charge cooler system is great and can achieve the best results, especially on short sprint events and for the drag strip where you can fill them with ice. But for the cost and ease a FMIC is by far the simplest/lightest and cheapest option and will achieve the best results for the average driver...the extra pipework will add a bit of turbo lag, but I doubt you`d be able to tell the difference in the real world....as long as you keep pipework as far away from hot things as possible you`ll manage to acheive a good effective system.

A few things to consider though......dont go for a FMIC thats too big and try to avoid cheap ebay FMICs they can suffer terrible pressure drops and flow.

Also ducting can be very important, a good duct can make a FMIC much more efficient than an unducted one, but again it depends on available space and ability to make something...spending £££££ isnt always worth it.

RE a bonnet scoop....a hole in the bonnet can release unwanted hot air from the engine bay, but be careful in positioning as it can affect airflow through the radiator/FMIC etc and allow water into vulnerable electrical parts of the engine.

wondering slightly off topic now so I`ll stop here, I could talk all day about engine and induction cooling :giggle:
