Oil pick up failure!

Featured Replies

hello all

I have an 02 plate VRS and last night I got the engine oil light come on and beeping!! And the engine knocking!!

Yes yes I continued driving :-(

my question is, if I do a oil pick up pipe change will the motor run again and return to good engine pressure?

or is it more serious than that??

thanks

Alan

It all depends i think, sometimes you can be extremley lucky and changeing the pick up will solve it but on other times you could require a new engine :-(.

I changed mine 2k ago my strainer wasn't showing signs of blocking put for piece of mind its well worth replaceing it.

Errrm, to state the bleeding obvious....the fact the engine was knocking prob means its fecked.

Engine bearings, pistons/bores and turbo's dont usually like being operated under load without an adaquate supply of engine oil, thats why the engine oil warning light is red, which of course we all know means stop lol.

I'd drop the sump and remove/inspect/refit the main and big end bearing one at a time to see what condition they are in.

If the above all look OK, then to get an indication of what condition the other engine components are in ie; pistons, bores, camshaft and turbo bearings, cut open the engine oil filter and check between the filter elements paper folds for traces of metallic particals....if you dont find any then you may have got away with it.

Best of luck

Bill.

I'm afraid I'd have to agree with Bill; best case is that you've "only" managed to run the mains and/or big ends. Worst case is that you've also done the little ends, cam bearings, possibly cam followers and turbo bearings as well.

change the strainer and see what happens. The knocking/rattling might be the vvt and might settle down afterwards.

first to fail will be the turbo so that will need replacing

then you have to hope that the bottom end isnt damaged so change the strainer and prey

have to say why the feck would you still drive when an oil light comes on is beyond me and chances are that has cost you a small fortune

Thanks for all your comments.

So does anyone one know how much it will cost worse case??

And can anyone recommend a good machanic in the leicester area?

thanks

Worst case - engine build and new turbo - £2k+?

This happened to me, had to replaced oil pickup and buy a new turbo. Cost me about £400 in the end. If you want my advice DONT buy a second hand turbo as mine failed last week, you dont know the history of it even if the seller reckons its only done 10 miles lol. Brand new one came this morning and is getting fitted tommorow so in the end £1000+ to fix it :(

Whilst a blocked oil pick up is far more common, it could also be a broken chain or pump. Until you get the sump off you won't know for sure.

A few questions...

How long after the light came on before the knocking started?

How far and what speed did you drive it after the knocking started?
