Sock?

Featured Replies

Someone mentioned there being a white sock type thing in a vRS filter/intake I'm not sure and that it helps fuel ecomony if you remove it.. Anyone got a picture?

Hi after your post i did a bit of investigating here is the sock you mentioned.

Ive just removed it so il let you know about economy etc in a few more miles.

I'd guess it was there for either noise reduction through the filter or to stop more crap getting in the air filter?

Filter design is pretty poor anyhow so that's only going to make things worse..

I dont see anything wrong with the filter design its a pretty normal. The sock is more restriction on the air flow the only detriment it will have is the filter will get dirtier quicker but il probably change it for a pipercross one anyway

Looking forward to the results of MPG, are you hearing any more noise from the filter?

min is off now. From what im led to believe its for cold weather.

So far no real difference in noise

throttle response did seem very mildly better after about 15 miles but nothing to write home about.

I think any gains would be small but technically some restrction has been removed so air flow should be improved.

The filter design isnt the issue, the routing of the air box was, hence the noticeable gains when fitting an induction kit.

I see what you mean the airflow isnt directed straight at/into the filter having said that most oem ones work in a similar way.

Out of interest techie did you have the forge filter on your boc and was it worth it?

Yes I did, 10bhp gain on same RR before and after.

I have been informed that the sock is used to stop minute particles such as insects entering the turbo. These are usually found on high performance rally cars and Volvo use them on the Police cars.

The way I look at it is... if it shouldn't be on there, I'm pretty sure VW wouldn't of designed it to have it on there (and pay the extra on millions of engines to put it on there) etc

if its there its there for a reason I recon

I believe it is to create what is effectively a 2 stage filtration system. The sock catches the larger particles of dust, crud and insects with a minimal loss of airflow, leaving the paper element to deal with the fine particles without the larger stuff blinding the filtration surface.

Ah so it is there for a purpose then even though it reduces performance. What happens warranty wise if I was to fit an induction kit?

To be honest it makes sense on rally cars pummeling through dusty conditions etc

i can only see it being To prolong filter life because the filtration on the main filter is more than good enough for the use its going to get.

As for fitting an induction kit i dont think the warrenty will look kindly on it but it you could get away with fitting one its up to you.

Effectively you could fit an air filter and if encountered any problems and it needed to go back to the dealer you could remove and put the old air box back on. Obviously it's up to the individual if they want to do that.

Was that on max power, or across the rev range?

think this was his graph iirc. Purely intake gains as the car was on standard software for both runs.
