Removing door carrier

Featured Replies

Sometime next week I'm going to attempt to fix my rear offside window. It no longer winds down, and just makes a metal catching metal sound when you try to wind it.

Exactly like a problem I had on my old Polo, where the window regulator had bust. That means the metal carrier behind the doorcard has to come off to get to it.

I assume it's just a case of removing the doorcard, then drilling the rivets out, fix, then pop-rivet back on? Or can bolts be used for ease of removal incase it goes again in the future?

You won't be able to bolt it up as there is nothing to bolt into..

It's pretty much as the guide shows.

I assume a hand held pop rivet gun will do the job?

To do the proper large core rivets you need a big riveter.

But if yours is a 53 plate it will be bolted anyhow.

Ahh good news. I assume the swap was later on in the cars life to save costs in the factory?

Not costs, it's to make sure they were done up to the correct torque as a rivet will break off at a pre determined value.

Makes sense. Thanks for the info, I'll give this a bash tomorrow.

Don't suppose you know the usual costs for the regulator should the entire thing need replacing?

About £70 iirc.

Have you had any experience of repair kits like this rather than going to the expense of replacing the entire thing?

Right well I bought the repair kit as above, however after dismantling the door today, I found that I didn't need it.

Nothing had actually broken, it's just the plastic "pin" that holds the window into the carrier had popped out. After faffing about with the glass, finally figured out how to get it all back in. Not sure whether it's normal, but it had like an outer sheath that went in, then a middle section which kept the outer section in place. Kinda hard to describe unless you've seen it.

I also bought a few of the trim clips from the dealer this morning, as I was sure that I'd end up breaking them all as I took it apart.... Not needed to use a single one :o

Yeah that's right. All you do is with the glass out insert the outer peg into the glass then pop the inner core in.. The slide the glass back in and pop it back into place.

Ah, I manged to do that through the "inspection" hole in the door carrier without removing the glass.

The hard way then..lol

How do you get the glass back in though once it's fixed to the regulator?

It's not fixed to the reg. You put the pin in the slide the window down, the part where the pin fits into is open at the top so the pin slides downwards and snaps into place.

Ahh now he tells me

Ahh well, all fixed anyway now. I'll know for next time
