FL grill surround in black

Featured Replies

Well spent some time today wrapping some 3M matt black vinyl over my grill.

I have never been fan of the chrome as it's way to "bling" in my mind.

Very please with the end result and look, it matches the inner part of the grill perfectly. I have a few more idea's that I will try out as well in the near future... a few more pic's...

What do you think?

That looks a really good job mate and it looks great too.

I am not a fan of the chrome either but also not a fan of the colour coded approach unless its a black car so its a nice alternative.

Have been considering doing mine for a while. How hard was it? Any tips?

Jonno, it's pretty easy really when you do it for a living...... :smirk:

If you have patience and a heat gun, plus a few specialist tools handy then it doesn't take long.

When you remove the complete grill from the bonnet use a 6mm deep socket to put over the "push stud" fixings to make them compress then it's one large hex screw and 5 small ones holding it in place.

Removing the chrome outer grill takes a bit of time as all that holds it in are plastic tabs that need to be gently prised apart. I found it easier to remove the side tabs, then the bottom ones, leaving the top ones till last.

On the top edge there are 2 tabs that cannot be prised apart (leave these till later) these come apart once you have loosened all the others and then gently pull the chrome part downwards which releases these last top 2 tabs.

Fitting is much easier, as usuall just do the reverse of removal procedure.

very nice job on the grill the car looking good

Sorry....Doesnt do it for me at all...But if you like it......

dont like that at all, sorry. Does not go with the Blue IMO

Looks good.

I kinda like it, the only problem I have is that it emphasizes the size of the already overly big front grill.

Completely gree with the above, it looks good, but colour coded would be better, imho of course.

Nice job, but I don't think it fits in with the blue car. May look better on a white or black car.

I like very much!! Good job.

Great effort but still think colour coded is the way to go with those vile chrome VAG mouths

you wouldn't like my chrome mirror covers then! ;)

How susceptible to stone chips would 'wrappping' be?

As a few above have said I think it would work on a black, white or red car but not with the blue.

I much prefer colour coded, but then I would say that ;)

Don't mind silver mirrors had them on my RS6, although matt finish rather than chrome

Noticed sizeable chips on the chrome finish when I was wrapping the grill, so I'm sure over time the vinyl will take some damage hopefully not breaking right through showing the chrome.

any joy with the box? :smirk:

I do like the colour coded finish on your car it's way better than the chrome imho. I was just experimenting with the matt black, and obviously it didn't cost me much. Perhaps it may look better if other items were also black?

I think it looks great - i'd love to have that look on my grille, against my white paintwork that would look fantastic. My car also has matt black mirrors and roofbars so that would be spot on.

I've actually been trying (admittedly, not very hard) to find someone who could do that - no luck so far. Any chance you could do mine too?

:)

Nice job you've made of wrapping the grille surround, but I don't like the look - I think it would look in black on either a black car or MAYBE a white car.

I have colour-coded mine (white) - or should I say I got a bodyshop to do it - but I am having problems with it chipping very easily so I would love to know how the vinyl wrap gets on with stone chips!

good job on the matt black I am more partial to the colour coded blue though sorry but with more black bits might make a whole new look for the Octavia itself similar to how a lot of Leons are made
