Auto lights & aftermarket HIDs

Featured Replies

Hi,

I just got auto lights installed on my FL octavia, the auto lights work fine, just got a question for people who have Auto Lights with HIDS, since the lights come on once the key is in ignition, when i start the car the lights go dim abit for around 1-2secs, is this normal? i got aftermarket hids installed in my car, once the car is fired up its fine there is no dimming or blinking, the lights on dim abit at the initial crank of the engine, is this normal also with factory hids installed??

Thanks..

Xenons do take a second or two to warm up and reach full brightness, do they do the same when you turn on the ignition before you start the engine?

Yes once i turn the ignition they take few secs to reach full brightness but asoon as i crank the engine they go abit dim while the engine is cranking & return to full brightness when the engine turns on, i hope you are understanding what i m trying to say..

Thanks..

Sounds normal to me, the starter motor uses a lot of the batteries capacity which restricts the available power for the lights, hence they dim.

HID's also use a lot of power which will exacerbate the problem.

Even older cars with traditional halogen headlights will suffer the same symptoms.

My Octavia has factory fit xenon's, they are automatically turned off whilst the engine turns over, firing back up as soon as the engine starts.

You got autolights? so when you turn the ignition the lights turn on(ofcourse talking when its dark outside)

Does your xenons turn off automatically while cranking the motor & turn back on when the engine starts running??????

Thanks..

Overall, if xenons are fitted (either factory or aftermarket kit) it's better to turn them on once the engine is running. In the long run it will prevent excessive wear on the ballast unit, which is the weakest point of the setup. So the lights are only firing once, not initially when on ignition, and then a second time when the car starts.

Unfortunately for auto light people, this would mean switching the dial away from auto if it's dark when you get in. Which rather defeats the object of the system I suppose!

mine do not switch off (if in 'auto') while cranking the engine. they remain on, and proceed to do the calibration 'dance', nor do they dim!

if its diming while cranking the engine, it would tend to suggest some sort of electrical issue.

i guess its the starter taking alot of current to start the car from the battery thats why the slight dimming effect in the Xenons,

its like when we leave out bolero or music player on & start the car, it does go of for a sec at times, anyone noticed it? same issue

i m having when i start my car with the xenons on..

Thanks..

1) 2008 Octavia, factory fit xenons, auto lights.

It's dark, light switch in auto position.

Ignition on, headlights on.

Cranking the engine, headlights off.

Engine started, headlights on, calibration begins.

2) 1999 Peugeot 306, tungsten halogen headlights, no auto lights.

Headlights on, ignition on (bad practice, always start engine before loading the electrical system!)

Crank engine, headlights on but dim during cranking.

Engine started, headlights on, full brightness.

What the OP is describing is the starter motor taking priority in terms of the battery output, this starves the headlights of power and causes them to dim.

Perhaps its time for a battery voltage check?

just got my car scanned my vcds, i remember reading somewhere that there is some xenon settigns that can be done through vcds,

is this settings also for aftermarket xenons? any inputs?

thanks..

found this video on youtube, the FL octavia lights dont go off when the engine is cranked-

They look to be factory xenons as you can see them doing the dance later..

that was my point - they don't dim, nor go off!

but then again, that's factory fitted xenons with auto rain/light sensors.

aftermarkets r a different kettle of fish.

Don't get it, mine definately switch off whilst the engine starts.

Mine is a pre-FL, will this matter or do I have a fault?

i noticed its more of my parking side lights dimming then my xenons, do your have parking side lights activated in the uk?

Thanks..

if you've got DRLs activated, then the lights are on even when cranking over. Short of switching the light switch to sidelights, then back off you cannot start without the headlights being on. I've noticed that on mine, sometimes one of the HID units goes out completely and then comes back on when the engine starts.

If i deactivate the drls then my headlights wont switch on before i crank the car on auto settings?

thanks..
