7 digit postcode search on Satnav

Featured Replies

Newbie question!

Took delivery of my Superb 1.8 TSI Elegance Estate yesterday.

Fabulous car.

However - Satnav only enters 4 digits of postcode - should I have 7 digit lookup?

There is mention on this forum of receiving a DVD of maps when taking delivery of a Superb - should I ahve been given a disc?

Any advice greatfully received.

Many thanks.

Willubby

How old is the superb? Is it new?

If it's late 2010 onwards, then it should have V7 maps, and 7 digit search.

Thanks for such a quick reply.

It's brand new '11' plate collected yesterday - factory order as I wanted electric tailgate.

When I enter postcode it moves to street after fourth digit.

Should I have a disc of maps with the superb? What position am I in? Is the dealer obliged to sort this?

The car is otherwise perfect.

If you are anywhere near me let me know and I will load up the latest disc for you.

Hi Phil

That's a really generous offer - thanks.

But...having just forked out a large wedge of cash for a car I am going to pursue this with the dealer.

Does anyone know if I have a 'right' to the latest maps / firmware?

Sounds like you have an older disc as new ones have 7 digit search.

It happens.

I took delivery of my car in Jan this year, and thanks to these forums knew that there was a new version of the nav software available. Upon enquiring with the dealer, they assured me that it was the latest version (although they couldn't tell me what the latest version was), but I asked for a v7 disc anyway.

As it turned out, the dealer was wrong yet again, and the nav had the old software. Updated it myself with the disc and all is fine.

You should have got a disc with the car if you havent go back to the dealer, I believe the disc is sent out seperate to the car to prevent them disappearing on route. Whenwe got outr Octavia the dealer had not recieved the disc and so loaded it with their copy but we got both discs when I got the Superb a few weeks later. The DVD disc should be in a sealed case with Navigation DVD in 3 languages and the (V7) at the bottom, all marked up as genuine Skoda Accessories. On the rear of the case it gives a navigation DVD title as Europe West (V7) A2C53430633 with an order Number 3T0 051 859. If you havent got this with the car go back to the dealer it is part of the cost of the car and you are entitled to it.

Maps are not supplied with new vehicles unless you asked the dealer to order them. This can be checked by doing a full VIN search on your vehicle, standard order will show DVD NOT SUPPLIED. Dome dealers order for every vehicle most do not.

Hi Willuby,

Had this very discussion with my local dealer this very morning when I was ordering my new Superb.

If it wasn't ordered at the time the disc can be ordered afterwards.

As part of the MY12 build the Columbus hard drive will be pre loaded at the factory, so no disc.

The cost of the disc is included in speccing the Columbus, ie Elegance and so should come with the car.

Seems that some unscrupulous dealers have not been ordering the DVD and still charging the customer, thereby pocketing the cost of the DVD, circa £100 I believe

Not for one second implying that this has happened in your case, but you should defo be able to get the DVD from your dealer.

In Ireland, the Disc is NOT supplied as Standard, and is chargeable.

The 2009 / 2010 UK Cars, came with a disc.

New(er) 2011 models, do not come with disc as standard; maps are pre-installed, but i believe that it's not a chargeable option...

(I believe..!)

Just a quick comment about using 7 digit postcodes in UK.

This can lead you to arriving at the wrong destination. Quite a few organisations have a postcode which is different from their street address, ours is one and every so often we get complaints when a strange lorry driver circulates the housing estate behind the site in his artic.

Likewise in very rural areas, a single postcode can sometimes cover quite a large area, and even show up in the middle of a very large field, so it's best to drill down to street and number level anyway to avoid being confused right at journey's end.

It is extremely rare that a postcode is for one building, it normally covers an area or a full estate. A single house number with 7 digit postcode will not allways direct you to that exact number, it might only direct you to the centre of the postcode area. It all depends on the system used with the sat nav.

Never rely on your sat nav to take you to an exact position, the civillian GPS is not the same as military use. My Columbus is about 30 Mtrs. out, I have 5 different types of GPS equipment including marine, and none are exactly perfect.

I should have explained myself a bit better, apologies.

I'm not talking about the postcode on it's own taking you to the exact building as on a residential estate.

The situation often happens with large organisations that the postcode takes you to a different part of town, for example one place someone found themselves sat outside the local sorting office several miles away. People often expect that a large company will have its own postcode, and they do where the mail is delivered by the sack load as opposed to the postie on his normal round.

It's quite common in Europe, for example our station office in Germany that I visit most often, the postal address and street addresses are quite different. OK in that case they both have their own postcode, because Germany is just like that. There is only one physical site in Dusseldorf, at the street address, the postal address is somewhere else.

There are also some organisations that apparently deliberately arrange to "buy" a postcode for some nefarious reason, maybe marketing reasons perhaps, it always mystifies me exactly why. Their street address is in quite a different location from the postcode.

It's been encountered often enough that ime and honest opinion the ability to search on the full 7 digit postcode is somewhat over rated, this is from the practical viewpoint of an organisation where people get instructions to go to "x" and do it "now!!" with no mistakes and where the clock is ticking.

yeah my company (in the UK) has a range of postcodes they effectively "own"....the first half indicates that it belongs to the company and regardless of the second half post ends up at the one location which is our main office in the centre of the city where our central post room is - all post is then distributed internally from there by our own people. We have 4 other locations dotted around the city, the second part of the postcode indicates which building.

This is fine as a postal address, but doesn't work for sat nav as all the postcodes point to the same place on the map. We have to get used to pinching a postcode from a neighbouring business when we are telling people where to navigate their satnavs to!

also travelling to other companies alot, they seem to do a similar thing. so yeah, in my experience too, you can't rely on postcode entirely and need other bits of the address to make sure you end up at the right place.

I have the latest 733 maps and firmware and i still dont have 7 digit postcode on it give me 4 the street names im in Ireland i also tried a Beta 738 maps still the same no 7 digit

My employer, being a large company onsite (250 employees) has its own postcode, if you stick the postcode into any satnav it takes you to a road around the back which is a residential street. I was once waiting for a delivery until quiet late because the driver could not locate the offices on a housing estate, it was ony after he was going to return to the depot he drove past and saw the entrance on the main road.

If you put the postcode of my house into a satnav it will locate my house exactly, but because its on a farm there are no access roads on any satnavs so delivery drivers tend to drive round aimlessly trying to find the farm gate and dirt track, the exception is royal mail because they deliver to me all the time.

My Superb MY11 delivered on November 1st. had v.6 disc supplied.

I hounded the dealer and eventually got an updated v.7 disc.

Keep at 'em.

Hi,

Picked up my new 1.8tsi Superb on Thursday, Disc was preloaded with version 7, therefore 7 digit postcode entry and they gave the disc. You should definitely have the latest software.

Good luck with the garage, I am sure they will sort for you.

Cheers.

Willubby,

I agree with Philpix, I had the same issue (car delivered in December) I got quite a few different excuses but Skoda UK & then the dealer accepted that I should have got v7 & after a few weeks it turned up. I was asked to return the v6.1 disc and I left happy... loaded it on (it takes a while but it does eveything for you = quite idiot proof).

As Philpix says.... keep at them... if you fancy seeing other comments and some of the excuses I got feel free to take a look at the following.

My link

I can't see there being any reason for you not to get the latest version!

Good luck

Stef

I just had my Columbus unit replaced - see another thread, but it does not have 7 digit input - I evn asked the dealer if it would come with the latest software and he said it would - looks like he was wrong - how do you check the version number pls?

Hi all,

How do you know if you have the v6 or v7 sat nav?

Just picked up our car on Saturday and it doesn't do the 7 digit post code.

It's on a Sept 10 plate and the dealer said it would have come with the latest map. I have read elsewhere that I may have needed a firmware update but thought the firmware was for the older sat nav and not the 2010 models.

Any help would be great.

Cheers Ian.

Update:

Dealer got V7 DVD.

I drove in - DVD inserted. All update automatic while I read the newspaper.

Drove out 40 minutes later with V7 Maps and 7 Digit postcode.

Well done Gordon Lamb Skoda in Chesterfield.

Willubby.

The 7-digit postcode searching is not dependant on the V7 maps alone.

You also need to be running a certain revision of the firmware on the unit.

You'd think all new vehicles would be running the firmware required - however I can confirm this is not the case.

I picked up my new Octy with Columbus a few months ago.

V7 maps installed, but no 7-digit searching.

I had to find the latest stable firmware online and upgrade it myself, then reinstall my maps (as the firmware upgrade wiped the HD) and now I have the full searching capability.

Your dealership will not be interested in helping you with a firmware upgrade.

If you read the Skoda catalogues, as far as I know 7-digit searching is not actually listed in the specification.

So although it is a feature (as long as you're running V7 maps and have the right firmware) them supplying the unit with the old firmware and not having this feature doesn't go against the specification of the device as listed.

Pop along to vwnavi for the latest firmware - quick and easy to upgrade, but as it can wipe your HD make sure you have your maps disk to hand to reinstall.
