Horn Not Working...any ideas why?

Featured Replies

Hi, Our Roomster's horn has stopped making noise. :'( it was sounding a bit weak last for the few days, then tried it today and it has given up the ghost altogether, no sound is produced when the steering pad is pressed.

It sounds/feels like the switch on the steering wheel is working okay, (I can hear it "clicking" when pressed), fuse is also fine but i am having difficulty locating the actual horn unit under the bonnet, presumably under the plastic trim somewhere. Can anyone suggest what could be the problem and where under the bonnet is the horn?

The vehicle in question is a Roomster 3, 1.9tdi.

thanks for any help.

The horn is located in the front bumper, behind the black panel on nearside under the headlight.

Check for loose or dirty connections at the horn, a multimeter or test lamp will soon prove whether you've got power at the terminals.

It seems the general opinion of the horns (even when they are working)is that they are pretty feeble. A common upgrade is to replace with Stebel compact air horns. These fit nicely into the same space as the OE item and are much more effective. Last time I looked they were around about £25. I'm assuming your car is out of warranty, otherwise just let the dealer take care of it. Replacement electro-diaphragm type units are of course freely available for a direct like-for-like swap and cost a bit less.

If your car has foglights then I presume the horn will be behind the n/s lamp, but I can't be 100% certain on that as mine doesn't have them.

Hope that helps a bit.

Many thanks, thats exactly the information i was looking for. Fortunately the car is still under warranty (just), but i'll see if its an easy fix first. the horn upgrade sounds like a good idea and one i may do once its 3 years old.

thanks again

John

Oh, I don't know... I gave the fright of his life to a BMW driver who decided to turn right at a roundabout yesterday without signalling cutting me up in the process... He certainly heard the standard ones! ;)

Perhaps they've addressed the issue with later cars.

Our two Roomsters used to sound like flatulent Mallards pushing through a particularly choked canal before they were Stebel-ised. :giggle:
