Daytime running/styling lights

Featured Replies

Does anyone know hat the legalities are involving DRL's?

I saw a passat the other day who had replaced the vw badge with white led lights. is this legal.

Is there a height law or how many you can have on your car etc. Seems like some people might go over the top with lights.

Cheers for any info.

Whatever the law is, the public will generally get carried away and come up with tacky variants on a theme. Unfortunately, some of the general public are a bit like magpies and love shiny stuff. Before you know it we'll have Corsas and Fiestas looking like the trucks below. :(

It's a bit like Field of Dreams, 'Build it and they shall come'.

Build some cheap and nasty looking piece of plastic with lights in it and they'll buy it and put it on their car.

Can't find the relevant legalities at the moment, but yes there are "rules" and I know they have to be fitted in pairs, symetrically.

There is a certain amount of adjustment with mine so I just made sure they weren't pointing above the horizontal so they wouldn't dazzle. I would guess there are detailed rules for factory fit as with normal headlights though.

Your quote isn't quite right.

From 2012 all "new" cars will require DRL's.

It is not a requirement to retrofit them to any vehicle that didn't have them fitted originally.

It also only applies to new cars and not ones that already have type-approval.

So for example, say Ford releases a car in 2011 without DRL's.

Because it already has type approval there will be no requirement for this vehicle to have DRL's in 2012 even though they are being built "as new" at that time.

Me too. Page not found.....

Me three......

This may answer all relevant questions though. Since reading it I have rewired mine to go off when the headlights are turned on.
