312+256mm brake upgrade

Featured Replies

Ive got the chance to purchase the complete all round brake upgrade (312mm front and 256mm rears) for a pretty good price. I definitely want to upgrade to the 312 fronts because later in the year i want to get a remap, but ive seen a lot of threads on here saying the 256mm's are a waste of time. I do think the standard rear brakes look so small, even behind 16" wheels, but should i do it because i have the chance, or just leave it?? :S

What are my full set of standard brakes worth, SE red calipers with less than a year old discs/pads all round?

Standard calipers are almost worthless

Might get 50quid a pair if your extremely lucky

Not much as they're only really of any use on a vRS, Put them away should you decide to chop the car in, Revert back to standard and sell the 312's on!

Rears are useful as a replacement for a knackered caliper!

Old brakes are worth next to nothing tbh, might as well keep them and just swap them back when you sell.

As for the rear brake upgrade, its up to you. My mate is adamant its helped reduce nose dive under heavy braking a little, not to the point of being able to brake later, but just helps keep the back in check a little more. I`v done it last week, i dont drive all that hard, but just wanted to do it for looks more than anything else. B) If they are a good price, buy them and sell the rears on here if you dont want them?

Matt

I sold both my rear caliper sets for good money to people conceding from drums so don't assume they are worthless.

fair enough, i suppose keeping the standard brakes somewhere safe would be more cost effective than selling them.

I really dont know what to do? The next service (400 miles away) includes a brake fluid change so need to decide soon. I wasnt even considering changing the rears until these came up!! If its only for looks then i might move them on to someone who needs them.

the rears do make a diff...do it.

PM me if you end up selling rears please :-)

I'd but y the rears, simply for the fact I can go eBay, type in "Octavia VRS brake setup", and buy front and rear discs and pads that fit in one go lol.

The rears defo made a difference for me. A big difference IMO.

Good point!!

That said i sold my Original 288mm fronts for £80 plus P&P

is it easy enough to change all the calipers and bleed the brakes? Is there any order for the ABS, or doesnt having ABS matter? Ive changed and bled a few brakes before but never with ABS.

Piece of cake and just bleed them as normal with a pressure bleeder like Gunsons EZBleed.

Cheers, ive got a pressure bleeder so it should be a piece of cake!

Don't forget to do the clutch as well as it uses the same fulid to activate the hydralic mech....brake bleed valve on top of gearbox! and do the nearest caliper to abs unit first then work further away B)

Thought you work furthest away first?

+1, that's the way I would do it.

on the upgrade you are talking about would it be just the 312 and 256 calipers, disks and pads of are hubs a must for a mk1 fabia vrs? do all the cars with say the 312fronts use 256mm rears?

Just caliper, carrier, discs & pads (front) are needed for the upgrades. You need the rears from a 2wd car for a straight swap

ok mate thankyou

I'd say don't mess with the clutch, it's far far easier to get air into it and it doesn't need to be changed for a safety reason.

Also the recomendedorder is furthest from the master cylinder first, the abs unit is kinda irrelevant really.

I'd far rather bleed the clutch at the same time as brakes (as per VAG) as it uses the same fluid from the same resevoir, than leave old fluid in that section of the pipe!!! Never had a problem with air in system as I always use a Gunsons Easy Bleed set!!! B)

I used to do furthest away, then read an artical in VW driver years ago when VAGTECH tuners first started and they do nearest to ABS pump then work away....tried it, and it bleeds better first time around!!! B)

But your not doing a fluid change are you? Just bleeding them after swapping brakes :wonder:

my fluid will be changed at the next service, so i was going to get the brakes done 1st, bleed, then take to skoda.

Ive had to change my plans as of today anyway :(
