Yeti options

Featured Replies

Morning everyone,

I've got quite a nice dilema, i'm in need of some opinions/ advice, I've driven the missus mad so now i'm on the forum to see who's next !

my battered Toyota auris is up for replacement.

For my job I need above average ground clearance and 4x4. I do 35k a year with a mix of farm tracks/motorways/a/b roads with quite a few stop starts throughout the day. I need dog space, no kids (yet).

As a company car driver i'm restricted to diesel, manual and 160 Co2's with the option of paying so much extra a month for anything over.

Yeti 140 4x4 S with more options

Yeti 110 4x4 SE

Octavia 140 Scout - extra £30 month

I like the idea of a long wheel base estate being more comfortable for long journeys but the Shorter Yeti being better for manouvreability and shorter approach angles.

Is there anything else I should be considering?

Thanks

You can't get a 140TDi S.

You should be fine with the 110BHP TDi unless you need lots of power for towing or something, the SE is a nice trim level.

The Octavia Scout Estate does not have a longer wheelbase, it has the same as the YETI. So is just as good on the open road.

The Scout has a bigger boot and longer overhangs giving reduced approach/departure angles and a lower driving position.

If you need the bigger boot, you need the Scout.

If you don't I'd go Yeti, but go for SE trim as the S feels a lot more basic inside.

The SE trim is nice and with one or two options (lumbar control is a must IMO) makes a great car with 4x4 ability and comfortable cruising.

I was debating what to replace my Volvo V50 with late last year. I wanted to come back into the VAG group for the engines (having previously owned an Audi A4 Avant and a VW Passat Estate, and several Golfs). I considered another Passat, ruled out an A4 on cost grounds, but then like you concluded I wanted 4x4 (I also do quite a bit of farm track - including the steep Pennine drive to my house). My choice came down to VW Tiguan, Yeti or Scout. The Tiguan was first to go (cost again - why pay so much more for a car that is not, in my opinion, demonstrably better).

Test drove an Octavia (albeit not a Scout - those are scarce) and the Yeti. The Octavia was OK, but the Yeti blew me away.

I too have no kids, but a big dog. Do lots of long journeys (including to the Alps and back a couple of times a year) and have no complaints at all about the comfort and ride of the Yeti on those journeys.

As you are a company car driver like myself the tax is a killer on the 4x4 due to the increase in co2 emissions, even for the 110bhp 4x4. I was able to get a 2wd elegance for a lot less monthly tax and contribution to the lease cost than the 4x4 SE, for which I would not have had to contribute at all.

I picked mine for the higher seating position, (easier to get in and out of than a normal car) and the high ground clearance as I also go down a lot of tracks for work. Never had any problems off road with the 2wd. It is very manouverable in tight areas when turning on narrow tracks and into field gates etc. I would hesitate to venture into a really soft area, but have had no problems powering through heavily rutted and very muddy tracks by keeping the vehicle moving and looking ahead.

I can't fault the yeti as a motorway car, the 110bhp is enough to go as fast or faster than most other traffic, the higher seating position improves view ahead when following cars, and it does nearly 50mpg.

In retrospect the only alternative for me would have been the new greenline, to pay even less tax, and slightly better npg, but I would have been concerned with the reduction it has in ground clearance.

Although the wheelbase is the same the "ramp-over" angle of the Scout is less than the Yeti's, for some reason.

I can confirm that the Yeti is very good off-road, especially on the type of terrain you specify.

+1 on all counts.

I had an Octy estate before the Yeti, it was a lot noisie at speed and not as comfortable for long trips, but a better boot space with the seats in.

Hi if you go for the Yeti unless you go for a used one you will have a six month or longer wait Pete

Thanks guys, thats helped, although I'm going to stick with 4x4 as wet grass and slopes don't mix - I realise this is also down to tyre type but. I'm going to think more till tues morn then put a order in.

so

i've got a small yeti se 110 4x4 (with lumbar support!) with less tax or

a scout 140 4x4 with more boot space and not a bad place with the seats down in the back for all sorts of gear and its flat loading floor. but then the Yeti has this space with the seats removed - seats I dont need 70% of the time. I'll only have the car for 3 years or 100k miles.

its a tough one.

You will wait as long for an Octavia Scout......

In my opinion the Yeti is more refined than the Octavia - test drive both if you can find oneemoticon-0136-giggle.gif

As Ramp-Over angle is based on only the wheelbase and the outright ground clearence, that must mean a Yeti has more space between it and the road than the Octavia Scout.

Edit: According to the brochures the Octavia Scout is 179mm and the Yeti is 180mm. Not exactly a lot in it!

It obviously makes a difference though!

Test drove a Yeti although it was only a 1400 petrol, it was a SE spec - the seat backs desperatley needed some support. the dealer seemed a little aprehensive as being a lease car it might not come directly from him but it drove well and was pleasantly supprised by the rear seat space.

As for Scout's they are a bit like hens teeth for dealer demo's, but i'm driving a mate's Ocatvia 140 SE tomorrow.

on paper the Scout does seem to have a less higher spec then a Yeti SE .
