Mondeo ST155....

The PD170 isn't particularly economical either really. Which makes it an even worse case for the TSI! Hadn't realised they'd released two flavours on the Mk5 actually.

Sure she wouldn't want a mapped PD140 GT instead Pagey? :)

If I could find one within our budget that would be the model of choice, no DPF to worry about, plenty of power from standard and good mpg with the option to remap to 170-180 if required! Not that swmbo would know about it though.

All reasons I ended up with an Elegance...

Mate, I think an Octy hatch, Elegance/L&K etc would be perfect but swmbo wants what she wants.....

But of course. Anything for the lady :D

Actually, what I was meaning there was the PD140 vs PD170 choice emoticon-0148-yes.gif

I was keen on this until you mentioned the 170 not being very economical, I guess its the engine in the dieseal vRS prior to the CR?

You really do have a 'lead foot'

Used to. The A3 got a right seeing to, daily. It managed to hold on to 36mpg despite my best efforts.

The test was a fair one, bit of economy and speed limit stuff mixed in with some blatting around like I was told to use as much fuel as possible.

Out of interest, what is the fuel economy like in the vRS?

50-55.

But that's driving more sensibly, I still corner quickly and boot it, but only up to the speed limits. î…

It's miles better than the PD was.

Is that in terms of mpg, performance and noise? B)

What was a ball park figure for the PD? If we go for the 170 in the link earlier, I would hope for around 45mpg. :S

The CR is quieter, is more efficient and smoother.

The PD is punchy which feels great. You should be able to drive normally and see averages of 40-50mpg depending on driving style and types of journeys. The PD economy was pretty hit and miss across different engines, some people seeing high figures, some people seeing lower figures.

The DPF thing would not put me off either. Sure there are people who've had issues, but that's like any car.

The bonus of the DPF 170 over the 140 without one is that under acceleration the 140 will smoke like a chimney, whereas the PD170 doesn't at all.

I'd have another tomorrow.

And if the DPF fails, gosh darn it, I will have to get a delete pipe and have it remapped!

Would you adam and eve it???

Swmbo just sent me the details of a car to look at.........bloody Corsa VXR, she needs to make her mind up already. :wall:

She just needs to get out there and test some - hopefully that'll put the Corsa idea to rest ;)

The PD170 choice is like any other - it's horses for courses. Personally I didn't like the idea of different injectors that weren't really allowed for in the original PD design, plus retro-designing the DPF system in - which again it was never supposed to have from the outset. It was just that EuroV regs came along before VAG had decided what to do with the next generation. And as said - it's like anything else; some will have issues along the way, others will have plain sailing over the course of ownership.

My PD140, which is on its standard map at the moment, Millers in the mix and with Pipewerx and decat fitted doesn't smoke at all on WoT - but again, that depends on how they're driven and how much soot is allowed to accumulate. As you might imagine, mine gets regular, yet sympathetic, use of the available engine revs and performance ;)

i had a titanium x , it was pretty good but the seats were horrendous, way too flat and no support on my lower back , went to scotland and was in bloody pain for lots of it , good car tho

We had an ST 155 estate at work and the seats were heavenly, so much so that fights broke out over who could have the keys. Presumably the ST had better seats than the tit X. It was a commendable vehicle, in the same way as a fab vRS it felt a lot faster then it was. The handling was brilliant, and it didnt seem to suffer from the weekly turbo failures of the previous TDCI 130 that we had before the ST. I also looked into ownership based on the works experience.

I know Wardy's feelings on these, but I have just found a cracking deal on a Corsa VXR, I like them and more importantly swmbo loves them, and they are rapid but still offer reasonable fuel economy......oooooo, decisions!

Just catching up on this one....

Any decisions made yet? :)

VW Golf GT preferably the TDi, if the right one turns up not fussed about 140 or 170. Reason being, we took the boys down to a local sea front last week and there was an absolutely mint Golf GT in red, parked my beast next to it and it was a close call........obviously the Skoda is better! :giggle:

Good man. Yep, the GT looks well in red. Don't see many about though.

Did you and the other half try a VXR?

Managed to step away from that idea after I read up on the build quality of the Corsa....

Ressurection -

May have found a suitable car (after nearly a year looking :o ) '57' plate Golf GT Tdi 140 in grey 54k 2 owners FVSH £8995 - before haggling begins - my only issue is it has a DPF, is this cause for concern on the 140?

I've heard of less issues with DPFs on the 140s, but then there are physically less out on the road.

Would still give me some cause for concern, as the PD lump wasn't really designed with DPF operation in mind.

Rest of the deal sounds good though.

Would you like the full details for my VW Golf GT? - I'm also thinking about selling up and was about to list a for sale thread. Difference here between mine and the one shown above is mainly the age (56 plate) the miles (64,000 miles) and number of doors (3). I'm more than happy to send you full details if you are interested?

I understand that this is for your wife and kids so unsure if a 3 door is what you are looking for.

The biggest concern would be not doing enough mile to re-gen the bl00dy thing, still as mentioned before, a delete pipe and remap would sort any problems.

Lovely car mate, I would be interested if it had 5 doors, wasn't black and didn't have the upgrade alloy's apart from that..... :giggle:
