Mondeo ST155....

Featured Replies

He has the 2.2 tdci in his Transit which has been problematic from day one, but main issues are what have been mentioned previously, fuel pump, injectors, dual mass flywheel etc. Also he said the timing chains can rattle and do need changing.

Seen a few where the chain had actually jumped a tooth or two and cracked/smashed the cam carriers :o

I thought the Accord had excellent build quality when I was looking around. The 2.2 is handy too.

Haha fair play. Didn't know they used the 2.2 in the Transit either - so that's something I've learnt :)

If a Golf, why not a Skoda? emoticon-0144-nod.gif

I have suggested L&K hatchbacks with the PD140, or a mk1 Furby vRS, but we both think they are looking a bit dated, it's swmbo's choice and she has always wanted a Golf, I suggested an ED30 but no cigar! :'(

We have a couple of the 2.2 dieseal Accords at work, nice comfortable ride, they go well and from the outside look nice. Unfortunately I'm really not a fan of the interior.

My neighbour is also a mechanic and has reported exactly the same issues, they have done several of them, which always come back with related problems, when they get one in now they recommend changing everything from the tank to the head emoticon-0106-crying.gif

I feel the same about the Passat.

:)

Mazda 6? although the older ones are slow. legacy? hmm, again a bit slow. might have to be an A4 170.

In ideal world it would be a white hatch vRS dieseal, but this is not an ideal world!

The Accord, although a nice overall car would put me to sleep if driven on a day-to-day basis.

Civic with the 2.2 on the other hand, in ES or EX trim I did consider. Drove well too and the CTDi lump is quiet and refined.

But if it needs to be a Golf, then that shouldn't be too difficult to sort out - Mk5 PD140 GT or SE perhaps?

Yep, looking at the GT 140 or 170 FL, they seem to be the only Golf Mk5 diesel models with any go, haven't seen the SE though which engines varieties are available?

Perhaps factor in a remap on the 140 if they're easier to come by.

1.9 PD105 and 2.0 PD140 in the SE, as I recall.

FYI - GTs can be quite hard to find in 170 form, and often the power output isn't advertised either. GT140 5drs are plentiful mind you. I know this as I tracked down one for a work mate of mine in March! Also, as you know - 2nd hand values are the usual Golf affair. He got a fairly lower miler mind you, but £13k on a March 08 GT170 3dr, 38k on the clock with leather, sports valance and the 18s did seem a touch steep....

Got 2 viable choices currently, 07reg GT170 DPF no optional goodies with 55k on the clock FSH 3 owners though, £8999. Or an 06 GT Tsi 170, loadsa goodies including high line display, RNS-510, centre armrest and ff sunroof, FSH, 1 owner £7999. Both are 5 door and dark metallic blue!! Decisions, decisions????

What's the mileage on the 2nd one? And when you say TSI on the second one, that's surely meaning petrol - which wouldn't make it 170PS? Or am I missing something?

It's right, they did a 1.4tsi 140 and 170bhp.

Shocking mpg though. Despite the book figures I struggled to get 25mpg and it felt slow.

53k on the Tsi, and yes, its the 170bhp petrol twincharger the same lump dropped in the new Furby and Bocanegra, they also do a 140 which is in the GT Sport, but the car isn't as spec'd, no auto wipers, lights etc.

I looked at the ST TDCI but I was dissapointed that although the exterior is pretty much the same as the ST220, the interior was almost bog standard Mondeo. Missing the recaro's etc. Shame as it is essentially the diesel version of the sporty number!

That MPG is shocking. I drive the GTI 2.0 TSI DSG and my average since owning the car (75k) is 30.5 mpg. And I aint been driving no Miss Daisy!

Just catching up on this....

Another +1 for the Mondeo ST. Really think they look nice on the exterior.

Just hope you can get over the interior gripes. Oval clock, variable finish, etc

My father had this generation of Mondeo as a company car, replaced at 100000 miles with one fault a split boost hose. Not all are bad. Saying that he hated it, an expanse of black plastic, a hard ride and just felt big and awkward to manoeuvre.

Jesus!!! We only considered the Tsi due to the fuel economy being far better than the vRS!!

Did you have the 140, or the 170?

Another contender has joined the party.....

Looking at the 2.2 diesel, very good mpg, quick enough, quirky interior, I just can't help thinking the exterior is carp.....?

The EX looks a bit better - the wheels are nicer. And you should really replace the clear plastic front grille with the Type-R mesh one :)

EX also gets cruise, satnav (not that great) and Bluetooth. That's a base model by the looks, as it not foglight-equipped (well one up from base as that has hubcaps ;))

The exterior eventually put me off, and my thoughts were you really needed a 3dr Type-S derv for it to work - but they're still up around the 10k+ mark IIRC.

That image was just for illustration tbh, and iirc it is the SE model, I have found an ES model which has front fogs, and cruise control....don't need sat-nav. The wheels are only 16" but swmbo doesn't care about that.

I am already watching a couple of Type R mesh grills :p as I concur, the lens effect thing is proper carp, also the black mouldings need coding.

I must admit though, unless you are talking full Type R in red with anthracite wheels the exterior is pretty....

Did you have the 140, or the 170?

It was a 170 on an extended test drive - couple of days. Waited weeks to get the demo.

Drove a test route as spiritedly as I had done in my A3 170 PD and the golf could get nowhere near the MPG. However it sounded gorgeous.

Thought it might be a random example ;)

Yep - ES seemed a decent compromise. The EX gets xenons too, but interesting they're factory-fitted but don't use a projector lens. Particularly old school.

If you want cruise, then it needs to be ES or above. It can't.... really can't, be retro-fitted.

Good interiors though, once you're in! I drove a 100k 06-plate EX as it was nearby - just as a benchmark. Had been ex-lease previously and was as sweet as a nut. Drove as it should and no squeaks, rattles; plus nothing had fallen off. It bodes well for longevity.

Parking sensors might be wise, as you can see pretty much nothing out of the back and the rear 3/4 visibility is near zero.

ChrisRS had a 3dr Type-S 2.2 in between the Fabia and current Octy, which he had more than a few problems with. So they're not without issue, but I'd say it scores well overall.

You really do have a 'lead foot'

The PD170 isn't particularly economical either really. Which makes it an even worse case for the TSI! Hadn't realised they'd released two flavours on the Mk5 actually.

Sure she wouldn't want a mapped PD140 GT instead Pagey? :)
