Remap - A Question Or Two...

Featured Replies

If you have been Jabba'd, please advise on the following:

1. What did you say when the engineer at Jabba asks how you want your remap?

2. Is it possible to specify the way the power comes "in" - progressively, massively at one point etc

3. Is there anything to do for a fourteen year old nearby or should she bring books and crayons (or drugs 'n' alcohol)?

4. Any shops or pubs within very low walking distance to get something to eat or should I get SWMBO to pack me 'n' the bairn some grub?

5. Are there any specific checks I should perform once the remap has been done to make sure everything is hunky dory? I don't want to have to do another 380 mile round trip if I can sort it out on the day.

6. Not to sound like a total wuss, but should I wear some old clothes? In other words is the place your typical, fairly mucky workshop?

Sorry if these questions have been asked before  but I would like to be as prepared as possible.

Any answers (except the sarcy type from Jon ;) ) would be much appreciated.

I'm really looking forward to my little trip down Peterborough way and if anyone is interested in meeting up on the Friday night or Saturday morning (staying over with family), please drop me a line :D

Ta for your time, Mark

1) smooth, driveable, like standard but quicker....

2) yes, see above really...

Nothing, it's in the middle of nowhere, bring something to amuse em!

4) nowhere, but they might run you down or go out for a buttie run anyway - I was too hyper hanging around the workshop etc, take sandwiches then you don't have to worry...

5) Mike does a 1552 check and a test drive after all is done to be sure - just drive home with a smile on your face.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Bearing in mind it's out in no-mans land, and the map (if anything like mine) will be very smooth, it won't really feel any quicker when it's just you and an empty road - it's when you come across traffic that you realise how much quicker it is.

6) pretty clean but homely place, I'd wear fairly comfy jeans n t-shirt etc - you can bet there will be other "nice things" in the workshop etc so it's nice not to worry about looking at something mid-project and getting oil on hands etc.

I'll dig up my post from vortex when I came back from Jabba.... hang on :D

You Post Whore, Ian :)

yup:

____________

Sorry I haven't posted before now, but spent the day grinning like the proverbial cheshire cat, and looking for someone, anyone, that might present a challenge!

First of all, the car was running 165bhp as standard, so the 150bhp that VAG quote is, well, under a little! It was also running 166lb ft torque, slightly over the 155lb ft that VAG quote.

Mike at Jabbasport spent a while trying different maps, and at first got 209bhp, but he wasn't happy and tweaked some more, but could never beat it, the car (and the air in their relatively small rolling road area) got hotter and hotter, and he couldn't beat it. We wondered if the (standard) dump valve was struggling a little, so dropped in a bailey to see if it made any difference - it didn't, so we swapped that back.

Mike suggested it felt like 95octane fuel, not the Optimax that was in, the fuel was getting low so I refilled locally with Optimax, the shell garage was on a main road, one optimax pump, so we knew it would be relatively new (those that have been following the thinking on Optimax will know that it seems to "die" the longer it is left in the shell station's tanks). We swapped the air filter also as my original was pretty clogged up.

Brought it back to Jabbasport, and once Lou's was finished (see other thread ) we put it back on the rollers, straight away we got.........

222bhp!

231lb ft torque ...again!

..and as Lou stated, the air pressure was low, so if anything that is *under* reading!

The drive home was just incredible, everything I came across was just dispatched without full throttle, just a little flex of the right foot and it flies. Sat behind a Rover 220 turbo that was hassling a mondeo for a while, and when he eventually passed it I overtook the mondeo and then him. The look on his face was just disbelief.

The rest of the journey was a blur, but my face was literally aching I was grinning so much. There was a MaxPowerMuppet in a nova that didn't seem too pleased when I got bored of him and disappeared over the next horizon, and then a MkIV Golf GTI (2.0) that went to my right as we got onto the motorway, then sheepishly tucked back in to the centre as I pulled away.

The car is *very* smooth, no surging or dead spots, still sits happily at 30-40mph without a murmor of complaint.

I wholeheartedly reccomend anyone to Jabbasport, they were friendly (more coffee? Feel free to help yourself) down to earth, willing to let you hang around and generally annoy them with questions whilst working.

..and for those that may suspect they have used a high (even dangerous) boost pressure to achieve those results, the car runs 1.0bar (14.5psi) steady with a overboost to 1.03bar (14.935psi) as the turbo spins up to help things along, both comfortably under the 15psi rating of our K03 turbo.

The peak torque and bhp figures appear exactly in the rev range as they did previously, so the driveability of the car is unchanged, the only characteristic that has changed looking at the dyno plots is that the performance holds much longer, whereas standard the torque and bhp fell away after about 5000rpm (but for a short spike).

I remember reading your post on Vortex all those moons ago - made me jealous as hell, I can tell you. Now that I'm only a week away from getting the same out of my car, I'm almost beside myself with anticipation. :D

Another question has occurred to me; if I fill the car up with Optimax (as always) the night before, I'll use about 1/2 to 2/3 of the tank to get there so will I have enough left for them to do the work or should I fill up before I get there?

Fill up if you can

You'll be like a kid on xmas eve, trust me!

I would try and fill up again before you get there, they do get through a bit doing the rolling road sessions, and when you leave you won't want to be heading anywhere busy to fill up now will you? :D

Hey, Jon's awake :D

Have you actually been remapped by them yet?

Its a secret! ;)

:D

Panrix

I think Ian has well and truly covered that one !

My dump valve diaphragm was split (as happens) so Mike replaced with the correct Bailey one - still definitely whooshier than standard, but I didn't buy it for that !

My 4x4 came out with very similar figures to Ian's and was about the same at the Jabba rolling road 'shootout' in May (do search) so its stayed consistent - ie 220bhp ish on normal unleaded.

You don't need a suit or tie to visit Jabba, but do be prepared for a long wait as (to echo Ian's comments) Mike is very thorough. Allow for 4 hours and the pain of hearing your car have yet another fine-tuning run on the RoRo !

After 5000m of Jabba (now 26k on car), the 'more of the same' description is very apt - the delivery is not 'exciting' in the way my Impreza Turbo was, but Ian's comment about traffic is spot on.

You notice how solidly the car is performing without drama.

It does cause some confusion among the 'Germanic Marques' drivers though :D

Beemers??? Where??? Lemme at 'em :D

This obsession with kicking Beemer ass is all down to the obsession my directors have with buying them!!! They all swan around thinking they are the bees knees when we all know what they should be driving :)

careful there...anyone would think there was an anti BMW feeling creeping out;)

Good thread Mark!

I was going to ask the same questions closer to my remap date; I think pretty much all those going for the remap over the next month wanted to ask the same things as well.;)

I've pretty much decided to have the Jetex exhaust fitted as well. I well looking forward to it and I've got another 2.5 weeks to go.:(

Meeting up with Dave (DaveU) who's having his remap in the morning session so as least I'll have someone to talk to.

I think also hanging around for 3-4 hours and looking at over potential mods for your beast is good for Jabba but bad for your wallet.:D

Cheers.

Adrian.

p.s. Jon's being very secretive about his new mods isn't he. It's ok you can ask Mike what he's upto.:D

Its called 'fighting back in a nice way', or an 'anti-superiority complex' or 'rubbing their noses in it', or causing a 'facial WTF reaction' in the rear view mirror :)

Not just BMWs though...and only when they are getting aggressive.
