Engine oil

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I have a 03 Superb 1.9Tdi manual with 240k on the clock.

A few questions

I have been using 5-40w carlube triple r diesel engine oil from GSF , is this the right grade??

do I need to change the water pump with the cambelt??

THANKS IN ADVANCE

You can use any 504.00 507.00 VW certified oil. I use Castrol SLX Professional VW LL III 5W-30.

Yes i would highly recommend changing the water pump, when you change cambelt, as the water pump is the weak link...

This is the oil you refer to, it is 505.01 certified which means it is OK for PD diesels, but only for fixed interval servicing. I prefer to use the later 507 grade but I still change it at around 10k miles but it is dearer.

Yeah, don't use anything less than 505.01, the lower spec oils are for previous VW derv engines, and don't worry about the 0/40 etc, ideal one is 5/30 but it's the 505.01+ you need to look for.

Thanks for the quick replies.

The oil I am using is vw certified.

This 5w-40w oil is the one sold to me after I give my registration number to GSF.

I used to use FUCHS TITAN 5w-40w but they have stopped selling it now.

I do a oil change every 10K.

I just wanted to know is do I use 5-30, 5-40, 10-40 as long as it is vw certified ??

because different places tell me different things.

As long as it is at least 505.01, it will be fine changed every 10k miles. Don't worry about anything else, just look for the VW classification.

The ECP supplied pump which I fitted to my MY '05 AWX was the last one of your group:

"KWP" ECP part No. 201 440 945 which has a metal impeller.

Perfect fit, no problems. ECP prices seem to have taken off quite a bit since I did the job last year.

Make sure that whoever fits the cambelt has the locking tools and knows how to do it. The instructions provided with the Litens tensioner describing how to hold it in the fullly retracted position using the locking pin are incorrect. Change both aux belts and check the tensioner bearings for each and the alternator sprag pulley whilst you do this job.

Very cheap.

what quantity of oil does the 1.9 tdi take to fill up when doing a full oil change? also the same for the coolant?

thanks.

The 1.9 ltr takes 3.8 ltr.

i have just purchased the waterpump from ECP. part no. 201 440 945. but it has the plastic impeller :(

can i not use this? what is it about the plastic impellers that makes people go for the metal impeller versions?

so which water pump actually has the metal impeller?

The KWP pump I fitted which was supplied by ECP under the part number I gave had a black painted metal impeller - it looks a bit like plastic.

The OE VAG pumps have an obviously plastic impeller which either breaks up, possibly jamming the cambelt and wrecking the engine or comes loose on the shaft. An OE pump is unlikely to last two cambelt changes.

It's always possible that the KWP pumps have been redesigned since I fitted mine, but I'd be surprised if they changed from metal to plastic, knowing how poor the VAG pumps are.
