mini cooper vs vrs

Featured Replies

My wife is thinking of a Fabia vrs or a mini cooper 1.6(facelift 2007-)

We had a fabia vrs before and when my wife used it for her short commute she used to complain it never reached its operating temperature.

However she loved it but she has also test drove a mini cooper. The performance is similar but what about the mpg.She used to get 40mpg out of our vrs.

I have heard the new minis are very economical for a petrol car and was wondering how they would compare.

I have asked on mini forums but haven't had a reply.

Any help appreciated.

If your going for a mini go for an original cooper!!

Don't forget there's a TDi Cooper too now - best of both worlds if you want economy and a Mini.

Er, for a daily commute? I think I'd rather a new one lol

As you can imagine im biased fabia all the way, but girls do love there mini's :smirk:

Gah who wants sensible, on a serious note if your after pure Eco why not the 1.9tdi non vrs?

If its only a short commute I'd avoid a diesel to be honest. I'm betting for most of the time the only reason we don't all drive petrols is because of milage. Plus, on short journeys you can get just as good mpg from a modern petrol as you can a diesel as diesels aren't at optimum efficiency until they're properly warm. you can also end up with DPF problems if you only ever drive a diesel on short journeys too.

Having said this, if you've sat in a new cooper, they are horrible plastic girl wardrobes on the inside. Why not something like a 16v lupo or similar? Or a 500 Abarth if you want something with a bit more poke?

personally i'd get a mini cooper

the fabia vrs does have a lot of niggling faults tbh

Mini's are just as bad mate, know a few people who have had them and there has been just the same if not more faults that have come from there cars

My missis has a cooper S and we both love it. I thought they were tosh before she got hers, Allthough i heard those 1.6 engine's DRINK petrol. Her's is terrible (allthough it is supercharged). My vRS a hell of alot more MPG than her cooper S.

aye as expensive as a turbo... or clutch / dmf combo?

Jesus, £100 for a decent used turbo & £100 fitting is hardly breaking the bank. But given the short trips i`d go for a petrol.

yes but not every1 does that!

i know 2 people who got blown turbo's fixed at Skoda

one under warranty and one out of pocket... and i believe both were +£3000 :o

depends where it goes, can take out intercooler, exhaust, even engine :o

Parts like that depend on how well serviced and kept the car is as well as how the car is driven, of course you will always get the odd friday night job, my aunts toureg after 1k miles on clock her turbo goes pop, and she isnt a heavy right footer!

I wont get into mention what went wrong with these cars but yes were talking the price of your combo pack and then some.

But as I said before many diffrent options which can cause an ill or broken part.

It's a cooper not a cooper s she was interested in.(price insurance etc)

The newer cooper (from 2007) is supposed to be much more economicl,in fact the official urban is exactly yhe same as the fabia (40mpg)

The old cooper was 31mpg. Considering how much quicker the cooper will warm up I wouldn't be surprised if it was more economical over a short trip.

All down to personal preference.

I sold an '05 Lupo GTi with 20k on it - now have an '04 Fabia vRS with 76k on it (plus plenty of change left in my pooch) - definitely prefer the Fabia plus I don't get 'girl's car' comments now.

I can't understand why you spend so much time on here when you clearly don't like vRSes (which is your opinion and you're entitled to it).

For the OP's needs, the Mini is definitely the one to go for.

Personally I don't like Minis, they just seem to be a fashion statement and the majority don't look very nice. I'd look at the Fiat 500 Abarth if it was me.

Any short commute will not allow an engine to get to normal working temperature.

I think this is a feeble lean excuse to the change car. LOL

Can't have economy and performance out of the same car, only better economy or better performance.

Opinions run high and be variable to ask drivers what they think of their vehicles running figures.

Her ignis is fully warm within 2 miles,so I've no reason to believe the cooper won't warm up just as quick, our old fabia vrs however never got to full operating temperature on her commute. So if the mini gives me say 40mpg and it is as quick as a fabia vrs she will be getting economy and performance...
