Spare wheel well drain hole?

Featured Replies

Just a quick question. I have just taken the spare wheel out of the wheel well on my 2001 reg Octavia Estate and notice a neat 1mm hole ahead of the spare wheel threaded hole through the floor pan to the road which I have never noticed before. There is no sign of water in the boot.

Is it a drain hole that should be left open or has a sealing plug been displaced? - I did hit a large lump of wood on the autoroute in France last year which went under the car.

Thanks for your help and great car incidentally, its about to make its 30th cross chaneel trip!

1mm hole is rather tiny.....

I can't remember what holes mine had in now, there us at least one "bunged" hole iirc, but I'll be under the car at the weekend (extended my elephant mod) so I can have a look then (2001 Elegance Estate).

Sorry - should have said 1 cm, or even 1/4 inch!

I think the bung hole is larger than 1cm, probably more like 2-3cm, but I have be honest and say I don't spend much time in there :-)

Phoned Skoda dealer, who I do not use, and they said there should be a bung in the hole - which is what I suspected.

But based on my experience of this and another main dealer I prefer to trust the Briskoda experts.

There is no 1cm hole in the spare wheel well, unless it was put there by someone or something hitting it.

But there is a 4cm hole there that indeed has a rubber bung in it to stop crud and water getting into boot.

I remember there being the bung hole and then a smaller hole with a plastic bung which looks to be for moisture / water to escape will have to double check. Have you got a picture?

Ollie, sorry but no picture as car is now fully loaded for continental trip. I noticed hole when checking pressure of spare before loading, it is only time I see that part of the car!

Hole is definitely factory-made, I have had car since new. It is about 1.5cm in diameter and is on centre line of car about 20cm ahead of the spare wheel mount. Everything points to it being a drain hole with a rubber bung that has gone AWOL.

But confirmation would be appreciated.

I checked under mine earlier today, there should be a non-bunged hole towards the front end of the tyre well. I took a picture, which I will try and copy off the camera a bit later....

Yeah that hole is perfectly normal.

It should have a little plastic deflector thingy clipped into it to let water out, but prevent dirt etc. from getting in. I've always thought it looks a bit flimsy and might drop out if you knock it! You should be fine without it though...

+1  perfect description!

My spare wheel gets dirty because of this hole did the same on my old vrs too.

Mine seems to be missing this deflector thing - assuming it is clipped in from underneath.

Picture of what mine looks like:

Well i take it back, there is a small hole in the boot. Mine was not visible coz of all the crud hidding it. But from underneath I can see it matches the other post pics.
