Nearly ran out of fuel, God damn range indicator!

Featured Replies

Nearly ran out of fuel the other day by being stupid!! I've only had my vRS for a couple of months so not fully used to its limitations lol. Was on holiday in the Yorkshire dales over the easter break and quite far from any sources of refuelling. The fuel light came on but the range said 50 miles left so I presumed i would be fine. Much to my horror the range descended from 50 to 0 miles over the next 10 miles of driving! Lets say I nearly had a trouser accident. I drove like an OAP and just managed to find a rural fuelling station. I must have driven for 10 miles or so with the range saying 0 with no idea when it was about to conk out. Scary stuff!

One explanation might be that the range indicator uses the calculated MPG of the previous 50m/km (can't remember which) to work out the range. I assume the Yorkshire dales are rather hilly, so perhaps the "memory" value was based on flat/motorway driving, thus when going over hills you were getting a much lower value (on my trip to work, 30mph on a flat road is about 45-50mpg, up a hill is 28-30mpg).

Agrred the "range" is worked out as an average of the last X miles driven.

Essentially it'd say "If've you've been driving like a grandad you'll get X miles" "if you've been driveing like a loony you'll only get X miles"

My fuel light came on during my first track session at Combe and the OBC reckoned i'd run out within 15 miles!

Which at the OBC indicated 17mpg was about right i reckon :D

10 miles on zero range whilst driving like a granny, were you even close to running out of fuel? what did the gauge look like?
