Please don't tell the Wife!

Featured Replies

We're off to the Czech Republic for a friends wedding in August - and have decided to drive (much more fun!). The half way point happens to be Nurburg! It would be rude not to have a day at the Ring and after a little persuasion I've convinced the Wife we can squeeze everything into my Mazda MX5!

Then I read about this Belgium chap............

A great little video and some fantastic photos;

Am I taking the wrong car?!

I am also priviliged to own a MX-5 as well as a Yeti - I would not hesitate to take the MX-5 to the Nürburgring.

Having taken my SM around Castle Coombe I would have to say yes - you would surprise yourself and many others out there emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

Enjoy but bear in mind a mate of took his Lotus Elan many moons ago and had to replace all 4 tyres when he returned to the UK and they had plenty of tread on them when he left home!!!!!

I've done circa 60ish laps at the ring on Tourist days now and you can have fun in ANY car, I actually find it more fun to not have a fast car as trying to drive an M3 around there is the most scariest thing in the world. You'll have a good time in the Yeti just remember that there will be other people who will be really going for it in much faster cars so be sure to give them plenty of space and keep to the right. Also motorbikes, just stay away from them.

Have a good time!

As do I and let me tell you I will take the Yeti ANY day over the MX-5 to the Ring. Why? The MX-5 will be amazing on the ring on what will be what, an hour or two of your whole trip. The rest of the time it is noisy, pointy and just tiring on long journeys with very little space for stuff in the car or the bootlet. No thanks. It is a short distance Sunday car. The Yeti is PERFECT for the whole trip AND it will drive rings around many a hot hatch on the Ring itself. You won't regret taking the Yeti. (And yes I took the Yeti to Castle Combe just like Mike and the MX-5 stayed at home! Says it all no?)

If this can do the Ring so can a Yeti:

Plus there are a few good vantage points you can get to if you have a 4x4, you can get right next to the track at Schwalbenschwanz, you can get to it just off the 412 before you get to the Wipperman viewing point. There might be a barrier but just follow the tracks around to the left (they are very obvious and you can get a really cool view point right next to the action, Schwalbenschwanz is a cool bend and you can get some brilliant photos.

Thanks for all the responses. I've been to the Ring several times now, but this is the first time with the Wife (previously it's been lads weekends away). I love it, and find it slightly addictive.

It's a great place to spend a few days - some of the cars are amazing and there are usually a few characters about too. I haven't been now for over a year and are really looking forward too it!

Laps are getting very expensive now though.

Not sure I agree with you there , last summer we toured France in our MX5 , taking only D roads , we went to Gorges du Verdon , The Tarn , Dordogne , Monaco . we were never tired or uncomfortable , we packed more clothes than we needed ,and had a great time and the car is just made for the back roads of France , having said that we are getting a Yeti to pull our caravan down to the same areas of France , and to attack the roads the MX5 is too low for , each car is best at what it is made for , and when the Yeti arrives in October/ November we will have the best of both worlds

I'd have to second that, we've been down to Italy four or five times now in my MX-5's and they've been brilliant. There's nothing better than blasting over the Alps with the roof down. B)

Totally. Which is why I own both too! The MX-5 is an amazing car in it's own right but I was just pointing out which I'd prefer on a long journey and in which I'd be the most relaxed after many hours behind the wheel. Most every test of the MX-5 note how noisy the softtop is at motorway speeds. The electric hardtop is only slightly less noisy. But as a sports car, a pointy just fast enough comfy roadster, nothing beats an MX-5 for the money.

Nice pic. I don't have something that picturesque of them both but this will do:

Fantastic photo, fantastic area and a pretty nice car too. Shall be going to Cantobre near Millau not far from Pont Sublime in August. Went there last year in a Mini Cooper D, this year in the Yeti!

I will be in the Rhine gorge with my Yeti & trailer tent.

Taking a BSA Bantam for playing with, I wonder if the BSA clutch will survive ?
