How to repair a (key?) scratch

Featured Replies

Hello

I had thought my first post on BRISKODA would have been about how pleased I'd been with my "new" 09 Fabia Greenline I Estate - how it gets 70, 80 or very occasionally 90 MPG, and how I can fit a 3m length of pipe in it, etc!

Instead, I found two scratches on it today, presumably done by someone with a key (they're at about hand height and wiggle - if they had been done by a passing vehicle I would have expected them to be straighter).

This is the newest car I've owned so, as you can imagine, I'm pretty peeved :(

Anyway, I don't think it's down to the metal - the base of the scratches is a sort of matt cream colour. The paint is metallic grey/mushroom (don't know the official name - the log book calls it "beige" which I think is a bit mean!). Can anyone suggest the best way to repair them to protect against corrosion, and hopefully hide them cosmetically?

Simon

try the franchise company " chips away " used them on quite a few similar things to yours always done a fab job matching the paint and on my experience you would never know there was ever a scratch they do top work

Oh and by the way welcome bud :)

Thanks hounded - I've looked them up and watched their "Ferrari" video. I hadn't expected a respray job though (not quite sure what I was hoping for - a magic touch-up stick?!) and it sounds like it might be pricey. I'll ask them for a quote though.

Thanks for the welcome too - there's some great info on here. I'll post something about my local service prices soon.

Sorry to hear about the scratches there are some ***** out there. The colour looks like cappuccino beige to me.

Just had Peter, my local ChipsAway man, round to look at it. He said it would be a difficult colour to match up properly and that, because both scratches are near the centre of the doors, he'd end up respraying a good portion of the panels. Therefore he advised either claiming on insurance and getting full door resprays done by Skoda, otherwise trying a stick of touch-up paint but using a very fine artist's brush and layering it up gradually. I'm not keen on an insurance claim as my excess is quite high so might give the touch-up approach a try - obviously it won't be invisible but if it covers the cream primer the scratches won't be so obvious.

I was impressed that Mr ChipsAway was so honest - I think that's a good sign and probably shows that the jobs they do will be of high standard.

Have a drive past your local skoda dealer during the day you should be able to see who they are using for smart repairs its worth approaching them because they normally have mixed enough skoda paint to know what is a good colour match and also what they can and can not get away with .

A rotary polisher could greatly reduce the.appearance of this, maybe someone nearby could help you. Hth

Thanks wilsy7 & bazaa. Would you put something in the scratch (like the touch-up paint) and then use a rotary polisher to make it smooth(ish) again?

I saw that you don't get a touch-up stick/brush but a pencil. Is this a bit like one of those gold/silver pens you have e.g. at Christmas where you push the nib in to pump the ink out? Do you think I'll be able to get enough paint out of it to use a fine brush instead? Or is the "pencil" tip very fine anyway?

(I called in at my local Skoda dealer today but apparently they would need to order it anyway)

Thanks for the help so far

:)
