I'm planning to do an oil change very soon. I'm just wondering where/what the cheapest 5lt oil is for my 1.2 petrol? Asda seem to do some cheap oil but not much mention about standards etc.

Please let me know where the bargains are at the moment...

Castrol is a good oil and only £24!

Only for 4l though but should be enough id have thought

My lupo gti supposedly takes 4.5l but the 4l was more than enough

Tbh in our engines it doesnt really matter its more important on the pd engines (pump deuce diesels)

I think on our petrols it only needs to meet 504 vw rating (i think)

The smaller number eg 5w means the lowest temp it is still viscous at......so a 5w is better than a 20w at say -10c... the higher number is to do with the upper temp limit! But it all is down to what the engine was designed for and the manufacturer states..eg a 0w/40 in a Ford will wreck it as they need oil that isn't so viscus

I know for my 1.6 avy vw engine 5w30 is recommended if your using fully synth

Actually VW 503 00 / VW 504 00 spec are longlife oils for flexible (extended) interval servicing which is not specified for UK Fabias as they are all on fixed interval servicing. It is expensive and rare.

The manual specifies VW 500 00 / VW 502 00 / VW 501 01. SAE rating is largely irrelevant, although 5/30 grades are more fuel efficient than thicker grades. Any oil that meets one of the VW specs will suffice.

The 1.2 3-pot is not fussy about oil, just make sure you change it at the recommended interval as the hydraulic tensioner for the camchain is known to gum up - leading to the cam chain jumping the sprocket and wiping out the head, so semi-synthetic or full synthetic is preferable to plain mineral oil.

I can recommend Quantum Platinum Oil from your VW/SEAT/Skoda/Audi dealer - most will sell it at around £25-£30 per 5 litres (phone them and check) - it is fully synthetic.

The 1.2 3 pot takes 3.0 litres.

Probably it depends on the manual, because the one on Skoda site states VW 501.01 502.00 and 504.00 for petrol cars on fixed interval. 504.00 is not so expensive lately(£30 for 5 litres) and definitely not rare any more, it is the fill for all newish VAG cars.

Go to TPS (Trade Part Specialists). They ARE Volkswagen and 5L of oil will be between £12 - £30 depending on which grade you are after. Also very cheap at the moment for filters etc.

I firstly suggest YOU find out what the correct grade of oil your car needs, (ask Skoda if not sure), then look for the cheapest price about.

Haynes is where I got my info from...and Millers oils state for Fabia 1.2lt 6v 02-07 is 2.4lt of oil, 1.2lt 6v 07-, and all 1.2lt 16v are 2.8lt of oil.

The skoda handbook that comes with the car is not that accurate in certain tech spec things as the book just applied across the range and were not allways up to date.

Just had a look at the Castrol and Mobil sites, and they both just state Fabia MKI 1.2i 40/47kw, 2003-2006. Where as Millers oils give 4 different options, 1.2lt 6v 2002-2007, 1.2lt 6v 2007+, 1.2lt 16v 2003-2007, 1.2lt 16v 2007+........I trust Millers oils and the Haynes info as more detailed and broken down!!! The 1.2lt 6v AWY 40kW was from 2002 and had 2.4lt oil capacity!

Anyway the diff between min and max of the dipstick is normally between 0.5 to 1lt, so if 2.4lt was incorrect it would show up on the min mark!

I always fill my filter before fitting it, then fill to min, then leave it for 2hrs to make sure it all drains to bottom of sump then recheck and top up to 2/3 full!!

I tend to do mine in the morning then do intial fill, then have lunch and a snooze......anyway how long do you leave the engine oil to drain when you do an oil change????

Thats what I expect from a dealer!!

I get my oil up to temp with a run or if every two years it idles with Wynns engine flush in. Then it gets drained with the oil very hot!! After the inital flow of oil and the first "5mins" I have in the past just to prove a point to myself, taken the main drain can out of the way and put a large glass jar under the drain hole...then come back and marked the level every 15mins. I have also tried this with the car jacked up level at the front only, to one side etc....I just leave it level on all four wheels. By leaving it drain for longer than 1/2 hour up to 1 1/2 hrs is the best....get about another 0.4 to 0.6lt of oil out (0.6lt was when I had to do it cold once)!! Well worth it as this stuff really is the "dreggs".

To be honest about the fill time...if I do it after lunch then I usually leave a min of 10mins before filling up some more!! It's just that sometimes I'm either doing the drain or fill at lunchtime or other car stuff...so time not wasted!!

I only do 4,600miles a year (shortest round trip is 32miles) so only change oil once a year.....Just try it, drain oil as you usually do, then swap the container and leave it for 1/2hr to 1 1/2hrs...you'll be surprised at what comes out!!!
