Console bushes :(

Featured Replies

I was changing my console bushes today at work when one wishbone bolt decided to completely strip the thread from the console and the other snapped in half! So now I need to get two consoles and bolts! I hate cars sometimes! Any idea of cost. I have been told it's a dealer only part and to expect to pay between £80-100 per side. Has anyone else had this fun before? As it seemed as if these bolts had never been touchedd as they were solid and would not barely move unless really worked hard! Lol

Pm'd :)

When my independent garage replaced new consoles with new bushes already fitted, I asked for old consoles back.

The consoles came off without any damage to threads, so have them in readiness to have me refit new bushes.

Consoles were approx £70.00+ each with new bushes fitted from Skoda, and was charged £40.00 each side for labour.

Skoda sells new console bushes around £9.00 each.

Ironically I have found what the bolt thread pitch is at 1.5mm.

NOT ADVISABLE, but a threaded bar could replace the bolt as the thread goes straight through the console housing and room to fit a locking/ nu-lock nut to keep in position.

As to the broken-off bolt, the need for console to be removed and remove offending bolt/ end tip, and possible re-tap thread and use fresh bolt.

If honest I did look at drilling it and re taping but will just replace them out right and I know they are ok then and sorted properly. I will just have to be without my car but it's a 5 mile walk to work and back which is fun. Did you get your consoles from skoda? And did they have them on the shelf or was it special order parts? Thanks olly

My independent garage ordered the two of them, I was handed the delivery boxes new consoles were delivered in,

which held my old consoles.emoticon-0148-yes.gif

New stretch bolts about £4.00 each from Skoda parts dept.

This can happen because of "dissimilar metal" corrosion....the bolts are steel, and the console units are alloy....galvanic battery is formed!! What I do is spray a lot of penetrating oil into the back of the the bolt hole as this is a "through" hole. Then leave for 15mins.....then they come out better.....also I use a 2ft long breaker bar to undo!!!! Remember this for next time!!! B)

I sprayed thoroughly with penetrating oil and used a snap on breaker bar which would barely touch the bolt! Which was an error really as i was putting too much torque onto the bolt, a smaller bar would have been better. I encounter siezed bolts every day and with some no matter how hard you try its going to break. Also you cannot get much oil/lubrication on the threads further up as its such a long bolt. It loosened easily but it was the after a good few turns it began to lock and eventually snapped off!

Oh well, you must have been unlucky I guess....like I say, never had it happen. B)
