Lowering Springs Rough?!

Featured Replies

Hi all.

Something for you all to think about, i had my fabia vrs lowered on apex springs last week which is supposed to have dropped it around 35/40mm. I am very pleased with the way it looks BUT....the ride is terrible. General driving is fine obviously its a firmer ride and therefore a bit bumpier but if i go over a dropped manhole cover or pot hole it feels like its 'bottoming out'. It literally feels like theres no suspension at all, it feels like theres no play.

I dont know if this is normal and i should put up with it as ive had it lowered or if maybe the springs havent been fitted properly.

Another thing to note is it seems as though i only get this if the manhole or pot hole is on the drivers side.

Any thoughts?

If you fit shorter, higher poundage springs, you will always get a harder ride.

Even so, it should be consistent side to side if you hit equal height bumps, which suggests an installation fault. I'd check that the springs are seated properly. The following applies to standard diameter coils, not to coilovers.

At the bottoms of the springs the coil ends in a flat parallel to the compression axis of the spring. This should be set against a similar flat in the seat. If they're not, then the spring isn't seated right.

Maybe just apex springs not so good for vrs without changing the shocks.. perhaps similar with spax? ones. Eibachs are good combo with std shocks. Maybe search or someone who had both will give more light.

I definately know I was bottoming out over pot holes on std suspension but now I am not

Another person realising that "looks" arn't all they're cracked up to be!!!

Get Koni FSD dampers and Eibach springs...best for comfort....increases road holding as the dampers are automatic "two stage".

Dropping 35/40mm using standard dampers will cause problems like mad!! B)

Thanks for your replies, i think its just a case of "cheap" springs. Although i will check the fitting when i next get the car up on a ramp.
