Featured Replies

hi new on here i have a 1999 skoda felica 1.3 but im have trouble with it first of all the dash lights go bright and the power drops for about a minute and the stereo goes off and its revs up and down and sometime the engine completely stops any help please would be great many thanks

We do have an entire forum devoted to the Felicia, (and Favorit and the commercial derivatives). :D

Anywah, I'd start by checking the alternator output voltage, because htis sounds like it might be yet another case of failed regulator syndrome, leading to over-voltage, and possibly fried electrics if I'm right and it's not fixed sharpish!

what should the output voltage and how do i check it many thanks

You'll need a voltmeter (or multimeter). Put it on the 0..20v scale, and measure the voltage across the battery terminals with the engine idling, and the electrics off. You should get a reading around 14 to 14.4v.

Anything higher than that and the voltage regulator on the alternator has failed. Do not use the car again until you've replaced the regulator.

Anything much lower, and I'd start by checking the alternator belt tension is correct. If it is, the alternator may be failing; ask an auto-electrician or small garage who'll probably give you a diagnosis for free as long as you buy the new unit (if required) from them.
