Fixed it! Centre Cubby Hole Squeak (Not really that, its something much much smaller and easier to rectify!)

Featured Replies

Hi,

Thanks to Great Yeti's diagrams, I have been able to remove the gear stick surrond and the tray. It turns out the culprit of my 6 months of creaking and rattling motoring and 4-5 (too many) visits to have it rectified was tackling the wrong problem! On a test drive, I was told that it was the tray rubbing against the pillar because when they are squeezed with pressure the noise disappear - fair enough!

Bother dealers/service centre did a good job with the tray, put a lot of sound insulation tape around it, but on closer inspection, I found out the culprit is.......................

THE FASTENING TAPE (VELCRO)

Basically, underneath the tray, there is a T-bar shaped plastic held to the transmission tunnel by 2 screws and on the two points of the T, there are some spikey fastening tape (hard core velcro), each side was meant to be connected to the corresponding velcro on the plastic panel of the foot compartment.

It came undone during the cold weather (creaking sound started in November), and after mocing it around with the tray out, I realise that was it! Now they are securely "locked" together and after a test drive on a very bumpy road, the noise is gone!

I was told some Octavias are also exhibiting a similar noise, that could be it and could be sorted in less than 10 minutes!

Cheers!

Now I understand what bit you mean!

Sorry, but to me a cubby box is the thing between the seats, in the centre of the car. Proves I've been involved in Land Rovers for too long!!

Try giving it a good clean to get any moulding release fluids off it, then a quick polish with Mr Sheen.

Will do, but any idea how to remove it??

Cubby Box in a LR is way bigger, or non-existent if you have a three seater!

Can't help with the removal but no squeaks or play in mine at all. Quiet and firm, just how I like my........ sorry got carried away there for a moment.

Hi there, thanks, I think that glue situation is similar to my velcro situation, where your dealer decided to do a permanent fix!
