Headlights coming on when travelling fast

Featured Replies

I was in Europe recently and noticed that when I was travelling at high speed (about 150kph upwards) on the Autobahn and my headlights are in the "Auto" setting, they suddenly turn themselves on. I am guessing this is for safety reasons - so other road users can see you, but is there a way of turning this off? It also seems to do this if you start to accellerate hard through the gears in Sport mode.

IIRC VCDS can adjust the speed which they come on (and I believe disable it altogether)

Have you tried turning the light switch to off? I would of thought that would of disabled the function also?

Turn switch all the way left which leaves DRL's on.

Why would you not want your car all lit up and easy to see when doing 150 Kph+?

Hi,

I agree with Farmerjim, I actually have my lights on ALL the time. Personally I think this is the safest option and gives other road users the greatest chance of seeing you, be it at speed on a motorway of when dawdling along a road where there are parked cars & potentially if moving slowly (eg. setting off) if you have no lights on, a driver pulling out might not look too hard & assume I'm a parked car.

That's just my tuppence worth, I know I've almost pulled out infront of someone once in such an instance (I consider my self to be very observant) so I bet I'm not the only one. If moving cars all have there lights on then I think it would lead to a slight reduction in unnecessary accidents.

RTFM-yes they do come on at high speed and also when wipers switched on

Neither can I think of a valid reason as to why op would want to disable this feature.

Surely that's why DRL's are now EU law.

Phil

User Manual states that; lights will be on highway mode when constantly driving 135 km/h or upper for more than 40 seconds or so.

could be 135kmh is above the legal speed limit in the uk and the local law enforcement perhaps take more notice of cars with their lights blazing in the fast lane during the day ;)

I'm not a big fan of DRL's myself, a study in Japan showed the use of DRLs on cars caused an increase in motorcycle accidents as the bikes get masked by all the car lights. Having said that the trend towards strips of LEDs, as my Octavia's got, is a much better as it's fairly distinct from a headlight.

It's not the DLRs that I want to turn off. The whole point is that if I have DLRs why do the headlights need to turn themselves on when driving (or accellerating)fast. Reason for thinking about diabling this feature is that (to me) if I am driving enthusiastically and come up behind someone going much slower, to have your main headlights blazing away (especially on a clear and sunny day) seems overly aggressive, that's all.

I am unfamiliar with what a IIRC VCDS is - is this something I can alter via the onboard computer or something the dealer can adjust...?

The dealer. But when the light switch is off, you have DRL and no low beams, regardless of speed.

As above, the simplest way is to move the headlight switch out of the 'auto' position into the 'off' position!

On the original mark 2 Superbs, the DRLs are the headlights! (at 92% power IIRC)

My current car Octavia II vRS with auto light has this feature, as others have said if you do not want headlights coming on then turn light switch to off. Personally I do not mind the feature

Or slow down.:giggle:
