Morning gentlepeople,

Was a little hands full over the few weeks so didnt get a chance to progress with this experiment. Getting all the proper tools and ample time I tackled the 2nd wheel. Variable heat setting on the heat gun really helped, this time I decided to stick the whole wheel. Well.. results are similar to before, which is a shame :( but there is a few things learnt from the 2nd time..

~ Spiders are near impossible to put on with one singular piece using the type of vinyl im using. IF I used something thicker it perhaps could stretch/bend further and getting better results without tearing, iirc the thickness I have on mine are only 75microns? "proper car vinyl" are at least 100 microns.

~ For the type of vinyl im using it will be ok with alloys that have a shallower 'depth', I would put a small wager that the original fabia vrs alloys is doable. If you look closely at the difference between spiders and originals, the spiders have a 'depth' of nearly 2" vertical drop (where wheel meets the hub, this is where I had most issues). Many other alloys don't do this, hence my reasoning.

~ IF the vinyl stretched far enough I would think it would take about 1-2hr per wheel, most of the time spent was actually patching rather than 'sticking', bubbles weren't and issue at all when sticking, very easy remove, million times easier than phone protector screens or window tinting.

So enough yabbering heres what your waiting for..

The bubbly bits on the edge of wheel is not a sticking error, its the missus thinking she could flatten a kerb with the wheel :wonder:...

(something is wrong with google uploader and/or my phone uploading pics)

Now the question is, what to do now.. lol

Get thicker vinyl and do it all again (but most likely no gold :( ), finish off the gold - though the finish is a bit rubbish when its up close :dull:

id say next step would be take it all off and go back to the original colour or paint them, they look aweful mate lol

Paint them the finish is pump I'm afraid mate!

Nah, stick with it mate, practice makes perfect ;)

Was watching this vid this morning..

Haha, yes overall finish is rubbish.. Some parts actually look really nice though, pah.. Need to find better vinyl.. Will do a part 2, possibly wont be gold though... I wonder what would dark red look like. Back to the drawing board. Not giving up on vinyls just yet

If I had those alloys it would be VERY easy, its got a shallow depth plus its smooth transition of curves. All I need now is a set of alloys which looks similar..

only just picked this thread up again john and am impressed disappointed and not surprised at the same time!

I reckon it's the spiders fault to be fair!

The wheels are hard enough to clean properly, harder to sand and then paint and as shown clearly a fecking nightmare to wrap vinyl around.

I think vinyl has it's place too but it's probably on a TT wheels with their 5 or 6 big fat wide spokes where vinyl would be simple to apply.

This picture however

makes me lean even closer to spraying my second set of spiders gold!!

I think i may invest in a single can and do a test wheel ;)

Fair play to you mate! it is a shame you can't do it in one piece, have you upgraded to a heat gun yet? that might stretch the vynle more and then be smoother on the round bits :)

looks good from far away, shame about the edges tho! I'd give it a go on my comps! :)

I think the colour is great. I have some Audi TT 6 spokes and thinking about trying vinyl on them.

Seeing the finish on these alloy's on the flat sections is making me think twice about forking out £200+ to have my professionally done in carbon vinyl, I think I will just do it myself along with the help of my mate it's available from many places at decent prices.

Thanks for the comments guys, good or bad

Yep, I got a variable Silverline heat gun, was about £22. Made things much much easier, I didnt use credit cards etc i simply used fingers pressing it to place etc. slight stretch of material will get rid of the bubbles.

The flat sections do look and feel really good, its stupidly easy to clean off brake dust/rubbish - pretty much wipe clean, no water needed. The next step for me is to get a set of 16s TT style or similar and attempt it again.

Haha, thought you might like that. :D
