Rear brake windback tool

Featured Replies

Does anyone know if this Draper tool is suitable for use on Octy rear pistons?

The product description rather unhelpfully just says: "Suitable for most rear brake calipers. Allows the caliper piston to be wound back for the fitting of new brake pads. Five key patterns, chemically blacked finish."

in theory yes, but that design are often not up to the job of calipers that have not been done for a while

this design is the one you really want

That is about 3 times the price of the draper one. I could try the draper one, and if that fails go back to my tried and tested method! (based around some scaffolding tube)... :giggle:

yes sadly it is, but after reading up on the cube not working or being up to the job, i bit the bullet and it does work well!

lol scaffold tube, bit of string and some bluetack....mcgyver style B)

I bought the draper one.. Complete waste of money. There's not really a prooper fitting side for the rear caliper on my vRS!!

Spend the extra, get the propper one!

Agreed, i bought one similar to the one on Ebay from Halfords ,made by Laser, dead easy to use.

Tool fabrication is the *way* forward. :p I might stick with what I have, as I don't often change the rear pads  and who knows what will or won't work on what ever car replaces the Octy when she eventually breaks down...

Well, you know the saying;

"Buy cheap, buy twice."

Personally I thought the ebay one was real cheap too, compared to the one-for-all windback set I have that cost over £50.

Can't understand why anybody would want to save any more than a good quality fit-for-purpose tool at only £19. :S

But then I'm stupid enough to have drawer after drawer full of Snap-on and Facom stuff. :D Unnecessary for most people, but when used (read: abused) everyday that lifetime guarantee comes in handy. And Snap-on screwdriver solid plastic screwdriver handles are second to none, and worth every penny. But you can keep the rubber crap.

That'll do it.

I wasn't knocking the quality of the ebay one, just in case anybody thought I was. Merely surprised that some people weren't willing to spend that little for reasonable quality tooling, compared to that nasty Draper "thing"!

In fact the set that I have is just as cheap as either of those other options, just more flexible. I could've spent a whole helluva lot more, but when it came down to it, I couldn't as I'm p!ss broke nowadays.

For cheap tools it's worthwhile looking at amazon as they frequently have things cheap. Free next day delivery on everything too if you have Prime (well worth it if you're ordering a few things you want next day). I got the Laser windback tool for something silly like £10 with the free next day delivery.

This is the one for you, well made and durable.

I just replaced the pads on the rear of my 2006 Octavia. I tried to use pliers to turn the piston but it needs to be pushed in as well as turned (clockwise) and was virtually impossible and soul destroying into the bargain. My dad arrived with a 'Laser' piston rewind tool and I had both brakes installed and the wheels back on in 30 minutes. I just needed the tool and a 24mm open ended spanner to turn the tension bolt on the removal tool and it was simple to use. I reckon 45-60 minutes would have done for the whole job if I'd had the removal tool from the start.

(No I don't work for Laser :D ).
