Bit of advice neeed...

Featured Replies

Hi all! After putting off buying another car for a couple of years, I've finally made up my mind to go for the vRS :)

I'm currently looking at a few options, so I'd like a bit of advice from you current owners, if you don't mind :D I'm still torn between new or used, and if used, whether to go for a car that's already been modded or not.

I've found a car I may be interested in, which has a Jabba remap, Milltek exhaust & Eilbach springs. The main question I have here is what kind of effect this has slightly longer-term on clutch & general engine wear & tear? Should I expect to pay more for servicing too, as the car is obviously "non-standard"? Any reasons why I shouldn't go for this car over a 'standard' one?

Although I've been driving for about 14 years, I've always stuck to standard cars until now, but I think it's time for a change ;) However, I don't want to leap in at the deep end without knowing at least a little of what I'm letting myself in for :)

Buying a modded car can be a good investment as chances are it was owned by an enthusiast (does it have a Briskoda sticker on it? :D) who took great care of it and I suspect the cost of the mods is not reflected in the price it's on the forecourt for. However, you may want to check the state of the warranty - will the dealer who sells it to you honour it, even though it's been modded and will they provide warranty for the modified parts? You may also want to drive it and compare to a standard one and see if it drives the way you want...

Insurance may also be an issue as the Jabba remap gives up to 50% increase in power (if the RR figures are to be believed ;)) so worth looking into that too.

Other option is to buy standard and do all the work yourself as and when you want. This gives you the peace of mind that it was all done properly, etc.

I'm looking at a private sale for this particular car, but I'll be looking into the warranty situation obviously. Of course I'll make sure to drive both a standard model & the modded one before I decide for sure which way to go :)

My main concerns right now are ongoing running costs relating to clutch & brakes etc on a modded car.

if done correctly and if you dont push the car all the time then wear and tear shouldn't be that much more. Lets face it a standard car could have been abused which will kill the clutch, brakes & etc quicker.

The car is still fairly new to know what effect the mods have on the car, I've had my car re-mapped for over a month and with 2.5k miles I haven't had anyproblems so far.

Thanks for the replies so far guys :)

I've been thinking about this a little more & may go for a new one with Xenons & cruise. I'll call a few dealers & find out what the delivery times are. Having thought about it more carefully, I think the advice above of modding myself after it's run in may be a good way to go.

Not doing the modding 'myself' obviously! Computers I can do.... Cars? Don't be silly

So many decisions to make.... :)

Depending what car you drive now, you will probably find a standard furby has plenty of power and actually takes a while to get used to ;)

Hehe, I drive a 1.1 206 at the moment, so I think you may be right ;)

I've had some 'proper' cars in the past... Not sure how I ended up with the Pug! :)

I think it's fair to say that most clutches expire sooner than expected on a modified car, or certainly show signs of wear sooner. Mine is on the way out (1.8t 53k) If I really abuse it it will slip, yet it's fine for going around town gently.

Re your 1.1 206...friend took this path Evo IV > diesel fiesta > 2.8v6 Golf

I think it will make you appreciate your past cars and new cars more.

Yep, my vrs has about twice as much as my previous....pug 106

Welcome to a whole new world of overtaking people without going 50:50 and phone a friend.

I upset my friend the other night by overtaking him going UP a quite steep hill, his car had nothing left...but it was only a fiesta lol.
