No smoke, but plenty of poke!

Featured Replies

Well it's not that old, 85k on the clock, about 20k on the hybrid from what I can tell, dunno how long the map's been on in its current state of tune though, from the looks of the receipts I've got it's been tweaked and evolved over a few dyno sessions.

Its not age, its abuse. My mate has a 70,000 mile fabia. It`s been driven pretty hard over that time & had a couple of poor maps on it. This is resulting in its current state of xx bar of boost, and being "quick" but not spectacular, and a bit of smoke under boost. However, another fabia, slightly less miles but a much tidier engine, same boost, is much quicker & burns much cleaner. Long term its going to make buying a decent fabia much harder, while the engine is bullet proof once its abused by hard driving & poor map`s it soon starts to suffer.

Matt

Yeah, that's true I suppose. The previous owner to me who did all the mods did drive it fairly hard but seemed to look after it, warmed up and cooled down (has a turbo timer fitted which he used to have set to 2:30) etc, had all the performance stuff done at Awesome who are one of the better tuners around the VAG scene. But then he wasn't the first owner, so I dunno. Anyhoo, emailed Shark earlier to ask about their maps, and I might well nip up at some point to talk to Ben about it, see if it is just a poor map or whatever.

There should be an open day of some sort on bank holiday Monday if I remember rightly

The Angel Tuning map I used to have never smoked much, but the Shark stage 2 map smokes a fair bit more on WOT, but I don't personally think its excessive. Certainly comes in handy for tailgaters though :giggle:

clutch in and a big rev?? lol

That's mine! Like I said, I've seen T.Spark's running similar amounts of smoke previously on a similar turbo setup under load, so I didn't think much of it until reading this thread. Doesn't seem to be boost leaking though, just been out in it and logged it, and it's making above specified boost in every gear (link)...looks like a visit to Shark would definitely be advantageous though...

Mine does this. Always over specified boost and has the same spike and roll off on actual boost. It's got an MD376, but it is still on the map for the stock turbo - that's what I blame it on. It's an Oscarli map.

Doesn't smoke much at all though as far as I am aware. I certainly don't see plumes of black out the back (haven't seen your video as it's blocked at work) B)

Yeah, there's one coming up, although I'll probably skip it. People seem to travel from quite a distance to use Ben's services so if anyone's making a special trip for the open day I'd feel bad about taking up his time when I only live locally and could go down anytime.

Plumes are what I have, at least at the top of 5th (didn't get far into 6th, ran out of runway)

Does he do much with hybrids? Anyone running one of Ben's maps on a Turbo Dynamics stage 2 that you know of?

I am, i'm running Bens map on this turbo and it's fine.

Well that's the thing. I think it sounds fine (it's louder than my old PD150 Leon, but then it's decatted and has a Milltek turbo-back, the Leon was standard exhaust-wise), and I think it goes fine. But I went to Santa Pod a few weeks back with a mate, who said it wasn't as quick as he was expecting given the performance stats over a mutual friend's Mk3 Ibiza Cupra he's driven against (160bhp petrol which I think is remapped). And then there's the smoke, but it's only when you have your foot close to the floor in 4th/5th/6th (in fact, there's a video of it below). I didn't think the smoke is that bad tbh, I've seen worse from T.Spark's Ibiza with the PD130 lump, but now I'm starting to wonder.

Sounds like what I should probably do is grab my laptop and VCDS cable and go for a run tonight to see if it looks like there's a leak, might do that in a minute while it's clear and quiet.

ps. out of interest, remove your oil filler cap while the engine is running and see how much vapour is rising out?

Will do. It doesn't seem to be burning oil, it's done around 5000 miles since the last oil change and I checked the level the other day, it was very slightly over the top of the hatched area but my drive is on an incline so I think the level's about right. I'll leave it parked on the road for a few hours tonight for the oil to settle properly and check it again, but I'm very sure it's not burning oil.

which turbo you running mate? did you run the shark map with std turbo aswell then? just curious as to the difference emoticon-0148-yes.gif

MD376 (TD Stage 2)

But no, i never ran a Shark Map on the standard Turbo, it previously had a rather aggressive Awesome GTi map on it before.

Glad i went with Shark though.

Hm, wonder which "TD Stage 2" turbo I actually have. I didn't realise there were two (MD376 and MD446). I'm guessing the fitment between the two would be the same anyway.

MD446 is a PD130 Hybrid.

MD376 is a PD150 Hybrid.

Should be able to tell by whats written on the turbo i think.

Won't be able to see the turbo easily on the car though? I'll check the invoice and see if it says. I thought the PD130 and PD150 were pretty much the same in stock form apart from turbo and map anyway, so surely you could fit a PD130 hybrid to a PD150 and vice versa, I don't understand why there's two different models?

edit - or does the PD130/PD150 actually refer to where the turbo came from, rather than what it can be fitted to? i.e. the PD130 hybrid is a smaller turbo that can be fitted to a PD130 or PD150 engine, and the PD150 is a larger turbo for either engine?

GT1749VB (PD150 stock turbo) is stronger, and has a bigger compressor wheel. Hence it spooling up slightly slower than the GT1749VA (PD130 stock turbo).

Those being the turbos fitted to the Golf Mk4, made by Garrett. As you know, the vast majority of Fabia vRS turbos are KKK.

Yeah, that makes more sense. I'll try and find out which one I've got, hopefully it's the hybrid 150 unit. All I know is that Awesome advertised it as a "new build Turbo Dynamics stage 2 hybrid" so it's been created from a brand new Garrett, but I'm just not 100% sure which one now. Cheers.

If it's down as 'Stage 2' it's likely to be the PD150 VB turbo that the hybrid's been built from.

I've not read all your posts in this thread, but what's your current mapping status on it? Is it running a map designed for a hybrid unit?

Yeah, Awesome fitted the hybrid and FMIC and other supporting bits, and they've done all the custom mapping for it.

Right, I see. It'll be running an APR map then.

I'd go and see Ben :)

I was under the impression Awesome had stopped selling APR remaps by 2009 when this work was done and switched to Revo, and also under the impression that hybrid turbo maps were all custom (or are you saying APR may have done it via Awesome sending the files and dyno results backwards and forwards to them for a kind of "remote" remap)? There's an email in Ben's inbox currently about the mapping so I'm just waiting for an answer from him about the costs etc :)

edit - actually, looks like they were still dealing with APR into 2010, so you're probably right :)

I know Awesome pretty well. It'll be an APR map :)

yes to the hybrid question, clarkey666 is running a hybrid with bens map, although im unsure of the origin of the hybrid.

For info, Clarkey's running an Allard VT2 Turbo, with Allard FMIC.
