No smoke, but plenty of poke!

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Since I've owned my Furby vRS I've never noticed much smoke. Even when I had it remapped by Shark, I was expecting more smoke but it's still next-to nothing.

A friend of mine followed me the other day and said he thought it was unusually light on smoke for a high-power diesel. Just the tiniest of coughs now-and-then - certainly nothing like the constant plumes of black smoke like you get when most diesel's are under load.

It's a 2006 BLT, nearly on 50,000 miles, with a Shark remap. No other mods - completely standard breathing and paper panel filter.

Is the lack of smoke a good thing? Is lack of smoke ever a symptom of something bad?

Lack of smoke is perfect !!!

I'm on a stage 2 map from Shark, goes like stink, and even after asking Ben to map it pretty much to the limit, it doesnt smoke :)

Absolutely a good thing! Smoke is just unburnt fuel and is no good for your turbo.

Last time I spoke to Ben he had a bit of a rant about how lots of smoke doesn't mean fast.

No smoke = better for your turbo, more MPG and a lot kinder to the environment too.

Dont know much about the details of the mapping process but theres something called 'smoke limiters' or something like that on the map that can be altered when creating the map, or at least i think thats what Ben told me anyway emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Smoke = high egt's = bad

Yup this is a good thing. Masses of smoke is just over fueling, The only smoke I get is white condensation smoke at start up, and for the first 1/4 mile or so, after that, very little smoke of any kind. 2007 SE VRS 39000 miles BLT engine as well, 148BHP on standard factory map.

i get a lil smoke on start up then after that nothing :)

Thanks for putting my mind at rest, I thought it was a good thing but I just wanted to check... quite paranoid sometimes!

D7 GUM - you've just reminded me, I do get a decent cough of smoke on start-up too.

My Bacon sarnie doesn't smoke much either. As per previous replies, a bit of whitish condensation smoke at startup, then pretty much nothing other than the odd puff. Lack of smoke definitely a good thing!

My vRS smokes like hell on high throttle in higher gears, I was under the impression that was pretty normal for highly tuned diesels...maybe I should drop into Shark and see what they think of it.

yeh would probly get it checked if its been re-mapped, or throw a some millers additive in and see if that helps or not emoticon-0148-yes.gif

ben is the master of more poke, less smoke :)

I've heard he's very good, I assume from your forum status that you work there? You've probably come across a mate of mine, Rob Allum, who's got his Mk3 Cupra mapped by Ben for this years VAG Trophy, and Rob's only ever said good things about Shark. I think I might also have a slight boost leak as well which won't be helping, as the gauge that's fitted doesn't work which to my mind implies that something's disconnected and leaking pressure somewhere, I just haven't had time to do anything about it. Once I've got it serviced, I might well pay a visit to Shark and get them to sort everything out at once :)

I know when Ben mapped mine n took it for a spin he said it was smoking top end so he took it back to workshop n re jigged the map n bam the smoke was gone.

Haven't got a bad word to say about shark performance.

Does he do much with hybrids? Anyone running one of Ben's maps on a Turbo Dynamics stage 2 that you know of?

yes to the hybrid question, clarkey666 is running a hybrid with bens map, although im unsure of the origin of the hybrid.

I would assume most hybrids are similar anyway (i.e. stage 1 from TD is probably pretty much the same as a Turbo Technics etc. I don't actually know what stage 2 entails, I never looked it up!). I'll have a look through clarkey's posts and see what he has to say about Shark, I'm just writing them a (longer than I intended) email to see what sort of cost etc I'd be looking at for it. Cheers!

Worked out why the boost gauge doesn't work, it's not actually connected to anything. Looks like it used to be (there's black marks on the end of the pipe which I guess is where there used to be rubber hose on it to fasten it to the feed) but I just pulled the pipe out and it definitely isn't connected now...just need to find out where it SHOULD go to and see if that helps the smoke at all, if not then could well be another Shark customer :D

If its popped off you will have a fairly big boost leak... Which will sound aweful / produce smoke / lose power

Well that's the thing. I think it sounds fine (it's louder than my old PD150 Leon, but then it's decatted and has a Milltek turbo-back, the Leon was standard exhaust-wise), and I think it goes fine. But I went to Santa Pod a few weeks back with a mate, who said it wasn't as quick as he was expecting given the performance stats over a mutual friend's Mk3 Ibiza Cupra he's driven against (160bhp petrol which I think is remapped). And then there's the smoke, but it's only when you have your foot close to the floor in 4th/5th/6th (in fact, there's a video of it below). I didn't think the smoke is that bad tbh, I've seen worse from T.Spark's Ibiza with the PD130 lump, but now I'm starting to wonder.

Sounds like what I should probably do is grab my laptop and VCDS cable and go for a run tonight to see if it looks like there's a leak, might do that in a minute while it's clear and quiet.

Who's yellow one is that cause its knackered!! Lolz! That is terrible

Yeah that's not good at all tbh!

Matt

That's mine! Like I said, I've seen T.Spark's running similar amounts of smoke previously on a similar turbo setup under load, so I didn't think much of it until reading this thread. Doesn't seem to be boost leaking though, just been out in it and logged it, and it's making above specified boost in every gear (link)...looks like a visit to Shark would definitely be advantageous though...

its normal for them to smoke bit high up the rev range as the combustion process is happening faster than the fuel can burn, and would be more visible on a mapped car with the higher fueling, im not sure how maps work but maybe ben starts to tone down the fueling higher up the revs so it doesnt smoke. sounds like it would work lol mine would smoke a wee bit on start up and high up the rev, but no where like that tbh lol mine would be similar ( quite a bit less) than the vid that trevor posted of his exhaust,

like mine would smoke the same as trevors only less smoke as in not a big burst of smoke like yours lol

i think that sounds ok lol :giggle:

A decent map, running any turbo shouldnt result in massive amounts of smoke. All the various mates i`v got that have had map`s from Unit 18 come out very smooth & powerful, but also very clean. Theres lots of variations of age/condition of engine and lots of other bits, sometimes theres a little extra smoke, but massive clouds arnt great tbh

Matt

Mines a tad smokey on boost, put it down to it not being used much in the past 7 and half years, thou it's something i would like to have checked.
