What Fuel Do I Use?

Featured Replies

does the vrs run on unleaded or super unleaded?

Is it ok to mix the 2 or should i change when the tank is nearly empty?

dont u love the computer when it says how many miles u can do with the furl, do all octavias do that?

It'll run either, its not fussy. I don't however recommend 92 octane :D

It will take anything from 95 and upwards if you read the owners manual... good bedtime reading that is ;)

.........If you can't sleep!:)

If you can afford / want to spend another 5p a litre (

I use Optimax from Shell; round here is Basingstoke is costs jsut the same as SUL from Sainsburys.

Without wanting to start the Optimax debate (again;)) I find my RS runs smoother and is a bit more responsive. So seeing as I'm paying no more than SUL I might as well (80.9p/ltr).

Incidently I find running on 95RON normal unleaded the engine sounds rougher and I definately gets less mpg.

But I don't bother on the Octavia, and that's from someone who ALWAYS used SUL in my Impreza

That's a big benefit of the custom remap as opposed to the rechip. :(

I ALWAYS use super unleaded in my Octavia... Simply doesn't run well on 95. Fortunately the company picks up the tab.

Skodi RS, Basingstoke you say, Im Winchester, at last I've found a Briskodian in the same county.

Question for you, Do you use Jacksons & if so how do they view mods/warranty issues. I'm just about to start the mods & as the car is only 9 months old I need a sympathetic dealer should I get any problems in the future.

Oh & I have just swithed to Optimax as I want to run a few tanks through before it gets tweaked !!

Stuart

If only there was an Optimax petrol station in or around Aylesbury... the nearest is about 20 miles away :(

Stock up nicely on Tesco Clubcard points though :D

Q.

supermarket petrol... prob come from the same tank at the port....

Hi Stuart,

Jackson's aremy local dealer and I have used for my previous Octy.

I have no idea how they view modding but they seem fairly nice although this is no indication; suppose I'll have to ask soon seeing as the RS is being remapped in a couple weeks time.

Will keep you posted.

Cheers.

Adrian.

I'm still trying to carry out my one-man fuel survey. When I've done more testing I'll post some results (not scientific, just feel). So far

Supermarket unleaded (Mainly JS) - car seems fine, but there IS a difference

ESSO SUL - seems perky but harsh

Optimax - smoothness and free-er revving than the 95 RON. Better top end pull.

Still meaning to have a period each on BP SUL, BP, SHELL and ESSO UL, but I'm trying to do it for several tankfuls. A recent weekend away has put my programme out by introducing other fuels as they became available along the way. I don't have easy access to other brands on my daily commute.

This could easily fall into a 'Shell Optimax versus the rest' debate which I made my contribution to on Scoobynet. It is still rolling on now but there are more and more people changing their minds ...!

I have my views on Optimax (through experience) after running 25000m in 8 months exclusively on SUL/Optimax. If I ever go back to a car where SUL must be used, I will use Esso or BP, not Optimax.

On the Octavia as it was remapped for normal unleaded I have the option on SUL but rarely use it.

It was also interesting at the Jabba Ro-Ro shoot out to compare the power figures of cars with different fuels (ie SUL v UL):-

- The rough difference was approx 2-3 bhp on the std 180bhp engine and about 6bhp on the remapped 220+ cars. Marginal unless your fuel is paid for IMHO.

I've been running mine on Optimax more out of interest really but when filling the odd tank with regular Shell unleaded I honestly cannot tell the difference.

However, there is a definite difference with regular supermarket unleaded. The car doesn't seem to rev as freely and I would also say that fuel consumption is higher.

I have found that mine doesnt really go faster on optimax but i do get better milage.. by 10% on the CLK..not use on the octy as have never put anything else in...

I tend to put diesel in mine. It don't run to good on any of the fuels listed above... :D

As for garage preference, I just use Sainsbury's because its as cheap as anywhere else, and I get Nectar points, and its local to my office. I've never noticed any performance increases using diesel from Esso or BP. But. it's only a damn tractor... :D which reminds me, I'm going to have a go in my mates tractor at the weekend. Top speed : 18mph - VRRRROOOOOOOOOOOMMMM! :drive1:

My mate has a Merc CLK 200K (or was it the 230k) anyway.....he's been using Optimax since I mentioned to him last year and he agrees that it gives better smoother resposne and more mpg.

I honestly don't believe it gives better performance just a better response and economy......and in Basingstoke, it costs the same an SUL from Sainsburys.

Cheers.

Adrian.

I think that for these 'user' tests of the relative merits of different grades of fuel to have any validity, they would need to be conducted 'blind', ie where the user was unaware of which fuel was in the tank. I am a firm believer in objective tests rather than subjective ones. And no, I don't believe that Persil washes whiter.

No, but fairy does :D

day tripper

If you haven't got time to read the manual, have a look at the inside of the fuel filler cap to see what octane rating is recommended.... rolleyes.gif

Forgot to mention that I polished my car with Autoglym the other day and I find that not only is the top speed higher, but fuel consumption has gone down. I also feel that the car glides more smoothly around corners and is less affected by crosswinds. Could all be in my mind, of course, but I'm sticking to that. Moreover, my mate who uses the same polish etc etc etc

try applying mobil 1 to your tyres Denis... it reduces the rolling resistance much better fuel consuption!

Or next time you are down your local filling station, slap a bit of diesel on them - has the same effect!!!

Which brings me to one of my major gripes. Why do filling stations provide those plastic gloves for use when filling up with diesel, yet don't provide plastic overshoes for those non-diesel users like me who have to stand in the b****y stuff when we fill our cars with petrol? Eh? grumpy.gif
