New DRL Bulbs

Featured Replies

I bought some replacement DRL bulbs for the Octy Elegance from fleabay. 18 SMD LED cluster advertised as Can-bus safe. Brilliant, the postie dropped them off today so I rushed home to fit them. I fitted one and after testing it the warning bulb on the dash came on with the message "Check daylight driving light front right".

Ahh well - I've contacted the seller informing them of this and am awaiting a response.

Shame as well - they look mint, I didn't realise just how yellow the stock bulbs are.

One question - please answer responsibly before taking the pi** out of - Do you need to inform your insurance company if you change bulbs for LED SMD's?? It's not like I'm installing HID's or anything.

And yes - I know the car needs cleaning, it's on my list for tomorrow.

Your choice. If you tell them they may load your premium, if you don't tell them and are in an accident then you are at risk for running illegal bulbs. Used to work for a loss adjusters (not motor I hasten to add) and insurance companies will do anything to get out of paying.

If you run a parallel 5w bulb in the back, this will eliminate de error.

Same as for the reverse lights

Or genuine CANBUS friendly ones will give the same result.

That´s the problem, many say they are can-bus friendly but the reality they are not.

I fully agree

I had no such issues with mine, but what's to say that the next batch from the same seller will be as accurate?

I seriously considered your method, but didn't want to mess around with the wiring loom, especially as it would be open to the elements.

I agree - I have experience in using soldering iron, so making additions to wiring is not that big a deal - but the fact that it'll be open to the elements and leaves a risk of shorting out the electrics when in use makes me reconsider doing anything of the sort with it.

I'll just invest in some Can-bus safe units and fit them, that was the plan to begin with anyway.

Surely the reason the standard bulbs look orange in the above picture is because they are dimmed to side lights.

My first picture was only for testing and did no soldering.

Used the blue clips on this picture.

On reverse lights was done dif.

Have them for many months now and no problem. Once a 5w bulb blew and did show error.

Those blue clips are not for external use - External use connectors would be insulated to stop corrosion of the cable / contacts. I wasn't saying solder the connections necessarily, but hiding a bulb inside the plastic which WILL get hot is probably not the best idea.

Besides - Basic electronics state that putting resistance loads in series will leave the current the same, but drop the voltage. Putting resistance loads in parallel will drop the current but leave the voltage the same.

If my memory serves - lowering the current will lead to dimmer lights (not too sure if SMD's will suffer from this though).

After this everything was isolated with tape, same tape as on wiring on engine bay area.

The bulb was not isolated. The area does hardly gets any water and will not touch anypart, will not heat the area. I actually stopped the first time and took the grill out the the lamp to see, the bulb was cool, why? outside air going into area and coolind down bulb.

Works for me and other over here

And the DRL original is not fully lit up, it´s at 92/93% of max 121%. That to can be changed via VAG-COM

Hi ,

Just realised you've got the drl's on with the headlights ...!!!

How did you do that ? VCDS ?? If yes please do tell me the coding changes ..!

I've got mine with the ADL function ....so it's either drl's or headlights .!

Why on earth would anyone want DRLs running with headlights?? emoticon-0114-dull.gif

The clue's in the first part of the acronym... it begins with D.

+1, it's bad enough that Skoda chose to put them in the fog light position as it is, the last thing I would want is for someone to think that I was driving with my fog lights on all the time :giggle:

Are you sure that his headlights are on in the pic? it looks like it might just be the light / flash reflecting off the projector?

I haven't seen the option in VCDS to enable them with the headlights .... but then I wouldn't of been looking for it ..... and if someone asked me to activate it I would refuse !! :swear:

Didn't want them personally but was surprised if they could be done at all ....

As I had spent a few hours searching if it was possible to do so .!

A friend had fitted these flea bay drl's and had wired them to the existing drl's ....!! Would be great fr him if it could at all be done ..!

But then could be the flash !!!! LOL<br /><br />Saw the washers so just assumed them to be xenons shinning !!

Only the OP knows for sure but I don't think the headlights are on, as mentioned above my money is on the reflection from the camera flash...

DRL's and dipped headlights should never be on together. DRL's are designed for use in daylight only and are too bright for use at night.

The Elegance specification here in the UK gets the headlight washers as standard even when the optional xenon headlights are not fitted.

Surely the reason the standard bulbs look orange in the above picture is because they are dimmed to side lights.

Only the LED DRL's on the vRS double up as side lights by dimming.

The incandescent DRL's on the OP's Elegance are either on or off and do not dim.

The side light function uses the usual 5W bulb in the main headlight cluster.

It is the very nature of the LED type DRL's that gives them their bright white appearance and is why they are often retrofitted to replace the yellow look of traditional filament bulbs.

Yep - those are projectors and the flash was bouncing off them..
