So, to cut a long story short, whilst I was installing some electrics into the car, a wire touched the ciggy lighter port... there was a *fizz* sound and a spark... and now the ciggy lighter doesn't work when I plug things into it

Also to drop into the equation, if you have the childlock enabled for the rear doors, I think that cuts the power to the lighter socket.

you mean the child window locks, the switch for which is on the drivers door

the child door locks just stop you exiting from the inside!
