Laws, Wheels and tires.

Featured Replies

(Wasnt too sure where to put this, so Im sorry if its the wrong place!)

Is there anyone who can answer my question with reguards to wheels, tires and the law? I've been looking for a Skoda for some time now (Six speed Tdi PD130 if you must know) And my plans for it are simple ones, Remap, FMIC, strip the inside out, Drop it, Darkside turbo kit and my 5x100 10j 205's rear steels with 8j 195's frounts. Yes, stretched tires.

Ok, I admit I have fallen into the area of "Dub" and I know some people dont like it, but I do and thats what matters and besides, I wanted somthing diffrent. Knowing that 10j is very wide, I was going to get rear arch flare done to cover up the tred. Is this all thats needed? So long as the top of the tire tred is covered by arch, it passes MOT/Law? Failing arch flare, I was going to put wider arches on to fully cover the tred.

Some people havnt really been able to give me a clear answer on the matter of law, tires and wheels, so if anyone here can explain it simpley, I'd be greatful.

I'll stay off your case about stretch. :p

At the rear, it's pretty much the case that you must cover at least 100 degrees of arc with a close-fitted arch like a Octy uses, or 90 deg plus a rear-ward extension from the highest point of the mudguard to a vertical line tangent to the tread. Fronts are different, but stock Octy arches will accomodate a 225 tyre anyway.

All of which makes me think that you might (depending on offset) get away with relieving the return lips, and pulling the rear arches.

Depending on the et of your wheels then I reckon its doable to get 10's on the back,I have 9.5 rears with 225's and with my arches flared and they fit under easily but regards to the law then its a bit of a grey area cos I believe mot law says the tread has to be covered and the rim can poke up to 30mm but not read this myself but its what peopl say and even still I've heard of people still been pulled over and taken to court over it,I've had no issues with mine yet but there's always time, depends on the individual copper and wether he wants to try and do something about it

Question?

As the Octavia is front wheel drive why are you putting the wheels with LEAST grip on the front?

Is it go or show?

There is no MOT requirement for the tread to be covered, though I believe that there is a construction and use one which could get you into trouble if stopped at the roadside. From an MOT point of view there is a check to ensure that the tyres do not foul part of the vehicle, though the manual does not state as to whether it is carried out with the suspension compressed. The usual check is with the weight of the car sitting on the wheels.
