Can the police do this??

Featured Replies

One assumes that these requirements also apply to the size of the plate/font. My (slightly amended) plate is shown below has no funny spacing or font but is just smaller than standard so it fits to the left of the air intake. With my MOT coming up soon, I will stick a normal plate over the top!

(back plate is completely standard)

When I was a student many moons ago a someone used to park a car in the uni carpark with a doctored plate that read FA66OT (FAGGOT).... which we found highly hilarious cos it was attached to a bright orange Ford Capri.

Its about time the authorities clamped down on number plates, they are an identification mark nothing else. If you want to personalise your car, then paint your name down the sides.

tbh mate i think u should open your mind, private plates are not everybodys cup of tea and a plate that says your name is a classy extra! you may not feel like they are, but at the end of the day the only reason why they want then changed is because of speed cameras.... so why no keep it contructive a pal?

It was constructive..

However, since names are repetive, whats to stop (as they do) people adjusting plates to try and mimic their name so that there is more than 1 car with very similar looking/sounding plates?

They may be "classy" but they are still a registration plate and should remain as such, clear and visible.

whats the licklyhood of two cars displaying the same plate (roughly) in the same area! lets be honest if speed cameras we never invented they wouldnt be clamping down. in my opinion private number plates are an extra just like a bodykit and dont do anybody any harm! nobody gets hurt by a incorectly spaced plate! mine is such that it would pass a mot (so said the inspector) because it was clear what it really ment.

So whats the likelyhood of 2 people having the same name?

We all know plates more than 1 plate can be made to say the same word/name.

If the plate in its original legal condition say a name or word, then fine. But when people start adjusting spacing, using dots/screw caps or slanting letters then thats when the authorities should step in and take action.

mine is such that it would pass a mot (so said the inspector) because it was clear what it really ment.

Then The Inspector Was Wrong The Number Plate Must Be Correctly Spaced And Must Not Be Made To Imply Any Different.

correct!

What about ANPR cameras then?

You know, the ones they use for catching untaxed, uninsured, stolen and cars connected with all sorts of dodgy activities?

A human can decipher a plate that's been fiddled with, ANPR can not and that's the reason for the clampdown. I don't have a problem with that at all.

are they introducing congestion charging in your area....?

you would be singing a different song if they were......

if ANPR is the cameras on the top of police cars??? it was able to read my plate... oh and in my experiece what one mot tester pass's can be differant to another!

Surely the cheapest way to perfectly and legally display your name on your registration plate is to change your name eg Mr OUC, first name PJ03, by deed poll.

Job's a good 'un:D
