Yep - see the DVLA website here -and they are clamping down on this more now.

would have thought they would have given you the option to take if off and go to a MOT test centre and get whatever bit of paper they give signed.

and yes i have read somewhere that this is now within their powers, world domination is next!!!!!

what a nanny state we're turning into!!!!

Yes, they can. Apparently it confuses the ANPR cameras.

I think they can also take action against the company who made the number plate (they can lose the right to make them) if they have made an illegal plate (Suppliers name on the plate is a requirement).

If the plate is not from a "legal source", then they can take action against you for a second number plate offence depending on the age of the car.

Best to have legal plates these days.

Look at it on the other side... if your child was been run over by a hit and run driver, would you like to be able to read his registration plate?

how narrow minded...:D

which is easier to remember.... J11 MPU or JUMP U???

R77CH R or R77 CHR???

you have to think outside of the box!

i would rather someone remembered the plate than didnt..

any way a child being run over is far more to do with poor education/ bad parenting than anything else...:P

R77CH R or R77 CHR???

Well, it may read nice, but if number and letters are being misformed, it may not be so easy to find out what it supposed to have been. If both 77's (as an example) are italic with a very little top flat bit (for want of a better description), you could easily mistake it for 11, or 17 or 71... Those are 4 cars who match the registration, not just one.

agree in theory but the chances of the other cars being same model and colour make this a bit of a non argument.... how many other cars could my octy have been?

are there any other octys on a j reg in red?

as will smith once said... "who else could it be but me.....!"

I have never been able to understand this personalised plate thing

I dont want people to remember my registration plate, no matter what im doing

Apart from the difference in colour, up till the 24th December, it could have been me....... :P

You prove the case against your argument there, as you would remember jump u, not the actual plate which, having smashed it against a childs head, you would replace with J11 MPU.....

There's 2 sides to the number plate argument..

1) Why bother fannying around with a few letters on a bit of plastic?...Umm...that'll be vanity

2) Why do the DVLA allow the sale of plates that will obviously be altered to suit the purposes of the buyer anyway??? Umm that'll be money grabbing then..

I'd rather spend the cash on something useful.

Beer springs to mind :D

Beer is good.

why change the plate.. ? most hit and run cars are caught whilst in the bodyshop.....

you might retain the plate and damage in order to obtain points Deathrace 2000 style?

how many other cars could my octy have been?

To an eyewitness who wouldn't necessarily know - it would be classified as "a red one"...which would increase the chances of a "duplicate" considerably...

Anyway, first Q the missus asked when she saw the plate was "why's he got 'Jim Poo' on his number plate?"...

Rob.

Beer is good.

:iagree: :iagree:

My plates dont have the company who made thems name on? Does that make them illegal? They were bought recently for Euro purposes.

As a parent who has had a child hit by a car I take these comments quite personally. The accident was nothing to do with poor education/ bad parenting.

These comments stink of ignorance, the main reason for most accidents!!

And as someone who was involved in an accident many years ago, with a child left running around the street while her mother put 3 ton of slap on her face for a night out. i'll take this opportunity to point out that there are 2 sides to that argument too.

depends on exactly when they were bought and when the car was registered etc

see here for details

all too common a story...

as many will know my dad was a policman for 30 years... lack of care by parents or gross stupidity on the part of children has taken him to many a post mortem. Sad. But true.

Shandyman nobody is saying you are a bad parent. However it is an all too common element in many child fatalities.

God i have started something now!!! i got told off before for the plates and i was told to take it to a mot test station to get checked. i got there and the tester said that if the car came in on an mot it would pass, but because the police have said they want the tester to check it he cant pass it. this was due to the fact that he said he could see the plates true spelling but it didnt conform to 100% plate laws. and just to clarify my plate isnt that mucked up not be be able to read. when u have just seen a hit and run 9times out of 10 u will forget most information. one look at my plate and u will have 10times the chance of catching me. im not some scummy criminal it was a 18th birthday prezzy that i could keep for life (or so i thought)

p.s will i get back what i paid?? tbh its like skoda taking my car off me because i did a hit and run (well i didnt but u get me)

I don't see how it's like that?

It would be like having red lights on the front of your car and the police telling you off because it's not legal...you could try getting a refund on the plates if the people who made them up didn't advise you they wouldn't be legal...but if they did, then you'll just have to cough up the
