MS Exchange 2K10 again

Featured Replies

At work we are now deploying into a live environment an Exchange 2K10 SP1 server, this is replacing a very old and rather flakey Exchange 2K3 install and I have an issue getting the two to co-exist.

The following steps were carried out.

Setup.com /pl

Setup.com /PrepareSchema

Setup.com /PrepareAD

Exchange 2K10 was then installed via the GUI using all roles except the unified messaging role. During the install it found the 2K3 server and seems to have setup some of the config.

Create mailstores etc. and other config tasks.

I have the following issues,

1) I can move mailboxes from Exchange 2K3 to 2K10 and the mailbox moves, but I cannot move the other way as I get an error in the move request log and it keeps retrying.

2) once moved to the new server, the users can receive mail fine from both internal and external sources but they cannot send any. The messages appear in the message queue on 2K10 and thats as far as they go. Both internal and external messages get stuck. External messages are for now going to route via 2K3.

Number 1 I think is a permissions issue on the mailstores on 2K3, as I mentioned earlier this server is flakey at the best of times.

Number 2, I have no clue about. I know the messages send via SMTP but cannot figure out what to configure with regards to hub transports and what settings to put in place on 2K3. If someone knows and can do a step by step guide that would be great, call the 2K3 box Server A, and the 2K10 box Server B.

I have had no official 2K10 or 2K7 training, so everything I know so far self learnt.

sounds like you need to drill down and set the SMTP smart host. if you look in "Organisation Configuration" "Hub Transport" "Send Connectors" choose "Windows SBS Internet Send SERVERNAME" then open the Network tab of the properties and choose "route mail through smart host" enter the ISP's smtp and it should send

Not sure what would cause internal issues as I have not done a proper migration using the tools. I am currently going 2k3sbs to 2011SBS but as they are a small site and the 2k3 is full of cr4p and mis-configuration I decided to just do a new domain and setup.

Yay, got it working. The cause was the settings authentication settings a predecessor had created on the default virtual smtp server on the EX2K3 box. Found some notes on interweb on the correct settings, bunged them in and send / receive of email now works perfectly. Still cannot move mailboxes, but thats less of an issue now email flow is ok.

All I need to do now is configure the send connectors I need, convert the address lists and email templates from ldap based to opath based and I can then move everyone over before doing the final config leading to the ultimate demise of the flakey 2K3 server.

Got Activesync working, owa working (all from inside the lan at the mo) so looking good.

I just had a time of it with the OWA. worked inside no problem but from outside it would present the certificate error on https to remote.domainname/owa and then give an error about not authorised to view page. Turned out the port forwarding on their Netpilot was wrong, but as the first bit worked I kept looking at the exchange as being at fault. Nearly drove me insane :D

I have it 90% working now, OWA both internal and external. Just waiting for the new certificate now so I can lose the self signed one, once I have that I can move all the users mailboxes over and repoint the firewall to the new server properly instead of my testing way.
