Lets Talk Brake Pads

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Just purchased some grooved 256mm discs for a rear upgrade (calipers currently off being refurbished), so thought I may as well change the front 312mm discs when I fit them and replace the fluid. Opted for Motul RBF660 fluid.

I also originally planned to fit Ferodo DS2500 pads, which seem to be a forum favourite and have an excellent reputation.

The new discs have arrived with brand new Mintex pads all round, so my query is whether the Ferodos are good enough in people's opinions to warrant spending another £150+ and discard the mintex pads?

If so, would people advise fitting the Ferodos to both front and rear? Or just fronts and fit the mintex's to the rears?

cheers for any input

I probs wouldnt unless your wanting to do some full on hard core driving. I would only replace them for the fer pads once they have gone caput!!

Depends on how big your budget is :-)

cheap cheap

Or DS2500's front and rear for £250 + price of discs on top........

Sorry for any confusion - they discs have already been purchased and have arrived (with standard mintex pads)...

Just wondered if its worth the extra outlay for the DS2500's?

I'm in the same situation. Just bought 256mm rears...about to refurb them.

I was going to just go fof the basic ferodo pads, cant really justify £150 for pads.

£150+ :o ds2500s for my Ibiza are only just over £100 delivered from camskill

Personally I wouldn't bother with the rear pads they do naff all so mintex are fine. I'd just stick with the Ferodos on the front, I know they aren't the cheapest but they are damn good   I've just fitted a set on mine, blown away by how good they were from the word go, even before they'd bedded in properly :o

Cheers Graham - just what I wanted to hear

Oh, DS2500's are £80 from Camskill for the rear, I bought some like 2 weeks ago.

There has been talk on this forum that the DS2500 don't confirm to Regulation 90 standards so therefore are not technically road legal. I am not sure how true it is.

Whatever you buy, make sure the front ones are the same or better than the rear.

From what I've read and heard from Badger5 (Bill, I dunno whether he's on here or not), they actually don't meet road standards because they're too good. The standards define several figures, with a +/- tolerance. Because the DS2500s are outside this tolerance "window", they can't conform to road regs, even though they're outside the tolerance in a good way.

That's about the only down side to them, they are strictly for off road use only ;)

I'm going to be getting some DS2500 when mine need replaceing.

So what if there not road legal whos going to know... not like anyone checks them lol

Just replace the fronts. Do the lines too if you haven't.

You got the right fluid!

DS-2500's are mental...

I've had other makes on previous cars in past, but have for the past 10yrs been running EBC "Green stuff" pads which are road legal...very good....new versions have edge chamfers, anti-squeel backing pads/shims, and bed-in coatings!!! And if you have over 200bhp then get their "Red stuff" pads. B)

Ds's are not necessary for a road car, It does say on the box, not for road use, When cold they feel awful and come into there own when hot. OE Pagid are the best, especially with 312's. Your groovy rears I take it are for "looks" only as they won't make the slightest difference to braking performance, rather just chew up the pads quicker so stick with the cheaper OE's or whatever you have now. Motul fluid is good enough but still needs changing every 2 years.

this conception that rear brakes do little is way underestimated...if thats what you think put 256 vented rears with good pads and come back and tell me its made no difference..
