True though aint it

Very! Value is an abstract concept to some people...

It's like anything though

Are you going to give a gift with Tesco shampoo in it... or L'oreal? even if they're made by the same company

Audi know they can charge more but they're essentially ripping their customers off due to their 'premium status'.

Essentially, yes I think they are, though I think they prefer to see it differently. Accountants refer to "esteem" value. Audi probably think they offer good esteem value for money compared with their competitors. It's all relative, as you say.

I prefer to actually maximise the amount of car I get for my money, thanks Audi, but that's why I'm not their target market.

I'd love to have an audi badge up front over say... Skoda, Seat or even VW.. but I'm not stupid enough to pay thousands of pounds more for the privilege when mechanically the cars are the same, use the same engines but just have a diff body shell and slightly diff interior. Rather pocket the difference, load this car up with kit and save a fortune doing it!

I've looked around and for what I'm getting with Skoda, I simply cannot match with any other manafacturer.. I call that a sensible purchase :)

Agreed. I'd been thinking of getting a low emissions car for a couple of years, and decided to take the plunge with the VAT offer. I of course looked at alternatives and there is nothing on the market that offers the same vfm as the Fabia Greenline ii in my opinion, not with really comparable stats like the mpg and, importantly, 89g/km. It only needs to be 99g/km to be VED free, so that's as far as some manufacturers go. I'm not a fan of hybrids but didn't think is be able to afford a low-emissions, fuel efficient diesel until they'd been around for a few more years and I could pick one up 2nd hand. So, for what I wanted, nothing really came close to competing with skoda. Now I've got it, I'm very impressed. I've had a couple of issues (see my other thread), but in terms of overall build quality, and the kit on the car I'm amazed it cost less than £12k!

"Esteem value"? I think basically we're back to badge snobbery.

Yes, that's basically it!

There is an Audi A1 parked outside my gym, as an advert.

It's nice, but it certainly isn't the £20,500 nice they're asking for it....
