Remove front seat

Featured Replies

Hi

I am new to the forum so apologies if this question came up before.

I want to remove the front passenger seat temporarily to transport a long (1.85m) item.

Can anyone advise the best way to do this and what I need (e.g. socket) and anything I have to watch out for?

thanks

Not sure of the bolt head, but if you turn the ignition on with an airbag unplugged (like the one in the seat) then you will need someone with VCDS to turn the airbag light back off again.

Thanks. The light is on at the moment, but since I have no passenger that's not a problem.

I'll need to find out what the bolt type is and where to get one. From another post I saw it is either Triple square or Spline but I can't tell the difference. If someone knows which one, the dimensions and where I can buy one, that'll be a big help.

Yes. I had that problem with a BMW and it needed a new pressure plate in the passenger seat, all because the ignition was turned on with the seat removed and sensor up plugged. Very expensive mistake...

Provided the item is under 100kg best to put it on the roof....with roofbars.

You can also try to fold the seat backwards as much as possible unlesss it's something very heavy or needs to be supported all the way.

Thanks, The item is a sofa, it is not too heavy. I tried folding the seat back down but its still too high to slide the sofa over. Unfortunately I fail 7cm with the seat all the way forward too. I have a long way to drive so the roof rack is not a good option either, but it would be cheaper one-off solution than fitting a towbar and trailer.

The seat is probably held in with Torx bolts, not the old fashioned hex headed things, but I don't know what size, sorry.

If you do remove the seat potentially not only will the seat airbag need reprogramming but also the seat belt tensioner. Personally I wouldn't bother; it could be VERY expensive!!!

It's bigger than T40 (the largest Torx I have) but Hexagon H8 will fit.(snugly)

They are M10 spline bolts (also known as triple square ), don't use anything else, they are thread locked in and can be quite tight. If it rounds off your in for a big bill.

Driving with the seat removed will bring a light on, will deactivate the rest of your airbags and probably invalidate your insurance.

Will it not lie on its back with the seat down?

The socket with a hex insert and 12 splined head is SV10LB - cost about £10 (12€) from a motor factor outlet may get one cheaper this was a genuine motor trade supplier here a la frog

Let the sofa stick out the back door and just tie the hatch down. Taking the seat out sounds like you'll be creating very expensive problems that will cost more than the sofa is worth. So tie door down or just buy another sofa.

Thanks everyone, I'll look for another solution since it seems the airbag issue is so expensive.

Hire a van?

Knowing the problems that the on board computers can have if it cant find a airbag or something .My choice would be to check the delivery cost it saves a load of hassle in the long run

Relating to carrying things. Lidl have the roof racks on sale today. (Monday)

Covered in another thread: someone bought them and they were an inch too short!!!! So stay clear of these.

The poster is seeking another solution, so this is potentially irrelevant. But wouldn't it be possibe, potentially, to detach holding bolts, without disconnecting anything else, and carefully manouver/postion the seat like that to get the item in, on a temp basis? I did something similar with my last Golf - I only needed to gain an inch or two to get the three parts of a roll top desk in.

Hi

Actually since I last wrote, I found out there is a switch in the glove box compartment to turn off the passenger side airbags. I wonder whether that deactivates the system so you can unplug. Anyway, no urgency right now as I am taking another load of stuff from here to Spain (1600 km). Ultimately might be cheaper to buy a sofa down there but seems a waste as the one I have is worth 1800 CHF (Swiss Franc) and is not being used.

best regards

I think you will find it deactives the airbag but that the system will still monitor its presence. So unplugging it will involve the same issues as described elsewhere.

See if there is a system like this in Switzerland: http://www.boxby.co.uk/courier-customers.asp List the sofa on there and courier companies with half loads heading your way will bid to collect said sofa and deposit it in Spain. Much easier than messing up your car.

correct just been in that very scenario looking for a 12v source re trailer hitch relay, switched off air bag, removed glove box, short run, replaced it all and voila the a/b warning light on - fortunately the local dealership(20 km distant) reset it all without any problems!

Sensible suggestion for a trip 'just around the corner' but it seems the OP is going from Switzerland to Spain, not not the best of ideas. A Policeman somewhere along the route would likely take an unhealthy interest in the load.

The OP has suggested just buying a sofa in Spain; best idea all round IMHO.
