ABS ECU fault repair costs

Recommended Posts

Less than a year ago I had the good old ABS ECU failure which cost me around £600 in total to fix by sending the unit away for repair at ECU Testing and having it refitted at a local VAG specalists.

At the time I never thought to contact skoda as i was out of warranty but I have heard lots of stories of Skoda contributing to the costs.....

Does anyone with any experience here know if i would be entitled to claim?

Many Thanks in advance

Surely you can claim from ECU testing?

ECU testing are the company that repaired the faulty skoda unit for me....

There is of course nothing to stop you trying.

However where I think you'll fail is that you haven't used a main dealer - a Skoda dealership.

Most people who have managed to get contributions out of warranty have shown that their car was regularly serviced at a main dealership and they have a full set of "Skoda Stamps" in their log book.

I think the fact you've gone to a third-party location, albeit a VAG specialist, may make the claim a lot more difficult.

Yes but surely they guarantee their own work???? I know that BBA-Reman do for 2yrs?? As I have used them in the past!!! B)

Don't think OP is saying it has gone wrong since the repair. He's asking if he can claim against SUK for the work ECU Testing did.

The answer is no. I see no chance they will pay anything, but you lose nothing if you write to them.

What are you talking about????

The OP wants compensation from Skoda for the fact he had to fork out £600 to ECU Testing for a repair that is a well-known defect.

If you are prepared for a long battle and lots of letter writing you might get something...... I had a similar situation with an Audi A3 that was 1 year out of warranty and had been serviced by an independant most of its life. The Turbo and Cylinder head needed replacing and I had it done at the independant at a cost of circa £3k using a genuine VAG head and a Turbo Technics recon turbo. Both the porous head and turbo are known issues, but Audi would have wanted circa £5k for the repair and I couldn't afford to get them to do it unless I had a guarantee that any goodwill gesture would cover the £2k gap in repair costs.

After the repair was done at the independant I wrote to Audi a total of six times and finally they sent me a cheque for £400, which I was well chuffed with, since they really didn't have to do anything for me. I know that was on 13% of the repair cost, but it was better than nothing. Each and every letter they responded to with a 'No' with the exception of the last one.

Moral of the story, you don't get unless you ask and be prepared to be persistant !

Sorry to both you and rwbaldwin....slightly mis-read OP :giggle:

Have to agree with rwbaldwin and stoofa.........if you get a part fixed outside the dealer network.......even for a known fault....chance of a "contribution".....so slim it's not true...getting blood out of a stone springs to mind!!! B)

Out of interest how much did ECU testing charge? and guarantee??? Did they state the fault? was it the broken "jumper wire" which is a thin metal wire (alu?) from the edge of the PCB to the connector??? B)

2 year guarantee and I believe around 400 quid. I was very impressed by the service too had it back in 2 days.

I think they said fault was water ingress but not too sure

Not bad!! I use BBA-reman who offer the same warranty etc..cheaper to remanufacter if posiable......a new electronics block (controller) is around £750 to £800 band new....and the hydralics block on its own is around £850 to £1,000 !!!! :o
