so the greenline yeti has stop start tech, can any one tell me what would happen if i did this with my yeti.would it lead to problems down the line with starter moter etc.stuck in traffic [heavy] just about every night.been thinking about switching of and starting again when traffic moves, unfortunatly sometimes it only moves about 10 yards then stop again[traffic lights, lots of em!].any thoughts guys??.

I think Rockhopper tried this on a journey around London. I'm sure he'll be up soon. :wonder:

Greenline start stop only engages once you put the car into neutral and apply the hand brake, usually at traffic lights etc

Also is very hit or miss if the engine will stop, not sure if certain criteria must be met - ie engine temperature, Aircon etc. Have driven 5 miles and engine has stopped at lights, have also driven 50 odd miles and engine did not stop when at lights.

In slow moving traffic, especially if your going down hill, if you engage the start/stop and the engine goes off, it will automatically start itself if you try to coast down the road.

I have had a BMW with stop/start for the last few years, typically if you think the traffic will be moving again very soon, you just keep the clutch depressed and that keeps the engine running. It's all a lot more instinctive and intuitive than you might think.

The starter motors are also different (certainly on the BMW and I would imagine VW/Skoda) they are upgraded compared to the standard model and turn the engine over quicker.

I do know where you are coming from, but they have been in use for quite a few years now and I haven't heard of any issues.

It will lead to problems further down the line as the cars with stop/start systems will have uprated starter motor, ring gear and battery to cope with the extra workload.

Apart from the software to do this there are numerous physical differences as mentioned above. So I don't think it will be an easy thing to retro-fit. We just have to wait for this tech to filter down from VW to the whole range. They have numerous engines now with this tech and if you look at the emission differences between a 2,0 TDI Passat and Superb they make a HUGE difference to CO2 numbers. And company car fleet managers will normally only pick the most efficient cars to save tax. Which is not always the best car in all respects.

Hi

Yes I have done this a little whilst around London when traffic has been very bad. I like the idea, but very few people seem to be able to implement it on automatics....I do worry about wearing the key/ignition barrel & starter motor out, so only turn off the engine when I know I'm going to be stationary for a while, but it definitely does make a big difference to the fuel consumption in heavy traffic.

Slightly off topic:-

Came across a quirk of the stop start system over the w/e.

I pulled up at a gate put the car into neutral and obviously the engine stopped.

I got out to open the gate and the car flashed up a warning telling me i had to turn off the ignition and restart the engine via the key.

I've done the same thing about 20 times in the past (allotment gate) and this is the first time it has ever done this.

I'm unsure what was different this one time around but thought i'd let you guys know it was something new.

(on another side note)

Should my mirror(s) tilt down when i reverse (they don't) and should the rear wash wipe engage in reverse, if the front wipers are on (again it doesn't)?

My old VW had both these features on a much lower spec vehicle.

I know i could read the manual....

I think sometimes the system might need reseting for some unknown reason.

If you don't have the electric memory seat then you will not be able to tip the left mirror down.....as the relevant electrics aren't there on a Skoda....

rear wipers activation is in the maxidot menus under setup somewhere - it's in the manual emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

My rear wiper option is ticked but they have not once EVER wiped when I put the car in reverse (with the main wipers on). I think the main wipers have to be on a constant wipe setting (which you never use on an Elegance with Auto wipers) before the rear wiper works. So a pretty useless feature then with Auto wipers.

I've hardly driven Elsie the Helipad in the rain ....emoticon-0140-rofl.gif Its been an unusual winter/spring.

PS and its not like I don't driver her, I've done 8000 miles in 6 months.

Up in the hills of Yorkshire we have something better than stop start.

A very tight mate of mine used to try and freewheel his Cortina 1.5 miles to the traffic lights in the valley bottom. :D

Frightening if you happened to be a passenger.

Mind you I did get the Octavia soaped up yesterday just before it started raining.

Mine is ticked and i suspect you've got it bob on that i've never actually put it onto constant wipe

This confuses me too - my Octavia Scout had this feature and the rear wipers always worked as soon as you went into reverse gear with the automatic front wiper setting on. However, I have never noticed the rear wiper on my Yeti operate with all the same settings. Weird!
