No pictures yet but today I (well, the mechanic did) fit springs, shock and RARB, the car definitely feels more steady around corners.

Next step FMIC and since one of the guys down the road just smashed his Golf mk4 I'll be taking his mirrors

Nice meeting you yesterday mate. :) Decent results!

  • Author

Thanks mate, good to meet you all and see some of the car in the flash.

Happy with the result for now, the turbo is maxed out and I can't get a new one (yet) plenty more to do anyway

Is that what ally suggested re pushing the turbo harder!

Details (crap picture, those are the blue VW MK4)

I'd suggest getting Mikalor SUPRA clamps. Look through my project thread for details.

I'm not happy with those figures and neither should you be!

You say the car feels a little sluggish and I'm not surprised, 130 BHP at the wheels is about 155 at the crank, where's the rest gone please?

??? :o

XA0sX - Thank you for the info, would you have a link for those? I'll get this fitted by unit 18 I'll see if Ali can get me the stuff

I must say that does seem rather low considering the mods done to the car :wonder:

Intrested to know what map the cars running. Any smoke? Or is it nice and clean?

??? :o

You forgot to type the rest of your question???

FYI, your dyno chart looks like a rudely healthy standard engine, surprised you lot didn't notice.

Or an unhealthy engine with those mods......

Guys there is nothing wrong with 191hp. the way this particular dyno works is different to what you normally read, please stop trying to worry the op

How do you read that dyno mate then, im confused :S

How do you arrive at 35 BHP lost in a FWD gearbox please?

And shouldn't the DIN correction factor be applied to the measured wheel HP since it's the only real number here?

Well, unfortunately I'm not the best person to explain how to read to figures (or any figures)the car doesn't feel sluggish but it feel very different than my previous one as it is completely different.

As the car as been tuned and regularly looked after by Unit 18 I'm confident that there are no issues with the turbo or the engine in general.

Perhaps if we ever meet up I could show you

Gushy wordy stuff

....a bit slow of the line but I guess that is me coming from a bigger car and not knowing how to drive a diesel properly....

Wall of pretty pictures for the hard of reading.

Your words not mine.

All I'm saying is that with those headline (torque) figures it should feel quicker.

I am sure that it has been immaculately maintained and am in no way suggesting otherwise, it's the dyno drivel I take issue with.

Let's clear up this dyno drivel issue, I am going to quote here from Dave Baker, one of the the most experienced, honest, no-nonsense tuners I've ever met and an acknowledged expert in his field, this guy has arguments with his mate Dave Vizard about gasflow esoterica, you may even have heard of David Vizard.

This is a summary of what I know to be true about chassis dynos:

"Average real transmission and tyre losses are about 10% of the flywheel power plus 10bhp for FWD cars and 12% plus 10bhp for RWD cars. This equates to about 15% to 17% for cars of "average" power output.

VW technical also quote their cars as losing, on average, about 15% of the flywheel power in the transmission and tyres.

The chassis dyno division of Bosch UK also suggest 15% as being a realistic estimate of transmission losses.

Be wary of "correction" factors for temperature and pressure which are often used to "massage" measured bhp figures in an unrealistic way.

The "coast down loss" which some rolling roads add to the measured wheel bhp is not an accurate estimate of real transmission and tyre losses and will not give a reliable measure of flywheel bhp except by coincidence in some cases."

Copyright David Baker and Puma Race Engines.

So there you have it, you now all know what I know and it didn't cost you a penny, so please, no more number nonsense, it sticks out like a sore thumb and makes you look stupid.

My dyno run showed 190.1 from just a custom map and pd160 intake (not that it seems to matter) which is unheard of really, the car pulled 164 at the wheels, do those numbers add up sepul? The boost was increased from 1.37 bar to 1.44. (if that matters)

IMO the mapper, dave wishart is excellent and really seems to know his stuff, the car drIves excellent, smooth right throughout the revs and not much smoke either, and what smoke there is isn't very thick.

Sorry for topic jacking but sepulchrave what do you do as a day job?

I'm glad you're pleased with it, 0.07 bar is about 1 psi so there is about 5% more air going into the engine than before and probably a lot more fuel as well. It sounds like a good quality remap with a nice smooth torque curve, although I would imagine the power starts to fade quite quickly as the standard intercooler becomes heatsoaked.

To be quite frank the WHP figure sounds high so I'm guessing that it is a 'corrected' figure of some sort. It would be nice to have the actual measured figure available and of course you should have insisted that you have 'before' and 'after' figures so you can compare apples with apples.

Sorry for topic jacking but sepulchrave what do you do as a day job?

I do alright thanks Hux ;)

Which RR would you reccomend ? be interesting taking there as see the difference

Going by some of the numbers and claims from this forum alone I'd say Shark are in front right now, but prepare for a big reality check.

Have I missed the point? Its running 190bhp, sounds pretty good given the mods to me.

I think that the point that they want to make is that the RR figures are incorrect and possibly something not right with the engine

I like challenges
