CR vRS Octavia Hatch with DSG

3:43 onwards

41.2mph backwards in the vRS

I dont know if i would ever be brave enough to try it unless i had a large empty bit of tarmac

Mike is that your VRS or the wifes?

Didn't know the CR revved that high... I assume that was the rev limiter stopping you going any quicker

Yes thats the rev limiter, absolutely no power though.

You do realise the ecu records hitting the rev limit repeatedly or for a sustained period and flags it voiding warranty don't you?

One member posted a scan from their stolen recovered VRS, and clearly showed the words warranty void.

Find an ex WD Austin Champ. They had a separate forward/reverse gearbox so you could use all 4 gears in reverse, and go the same speed backwards as forwards, although as I remember they could only do about 60 to 70mph forward. I never had the nerve to go that fast backwards.

Its alright I was only on it for a few seconds, had to back off before I hit a tree

Iirc it only takes a few seconds too log it

Thats ridiculous. They surely cannot void a warranty because you were on the rev limiter for 2 seconds? That's like saying, "you can buy our car and we'll give a nice long warranty, but drive it on the public highway and the warranty is void".

I'm not suggesting people should be hitting the limiter all the time, far form it, but it does happen occasionally and who are SKODA to tell me how to drive MY car? Pfft.

As for the OP, respect for doing that and taking a picture at the same time!!

Thats as may be but it's a fact, it may be a a touch longer than 2 secs but it still does it, if you take skoda's view would you want to repair a car thats dead because of over revving i.e. misuse, I know I wouldn't !!

I gugess the limiter is there for a reason, I think I have hit mine once and backed off, never to do it again as its telling me something really.

Cheers Skud, I thought this thread would be taken in the spirit it was intended as a bit of fun, rather than a lesson in how to drive your car. Still best not to argue with Fats after all he's a mod, best let the thread die.

Who's arguing ??

Whats being a mod got to do with anything ?

I'm mearly pointing out that you run the risk of voiding your warranty. Better I do that than a few members trying this out for themselves and finding out that they have no warranty.

I don't know whether the 'warranty void' text comes up on the Skoda diagnostics machine, I've seen it on VCDS once or twice and put it down to their sense of humour. Having a healthy engine on the limiter shouldn't really do it any harm, look at how diesels are emission tested, the problems arise when an inappropriately low gear is selected and engaged for the road speed, which will put the engine beyond the rev limiter.

Back on topic, the Daf 66 with the variomatic transmission is known for being as fast in reverse as it was forwards, though with a mechanical speedometer it wouldn't read any speed.

One of my mates had a Bond 3-wheeled Minicar, which was powered by a Villiers 2-stroke motorcycle engine with four forward gears. "Reverse gear" was an electrical device that made the engine run backwards. This effectively gave the car four reverse gears, which my mate used to demonstrate to our amusement. Not sure what speed he reached before he chickened out though

those things were hard enough to keep straight when going forward and almost impossible going backwards. If I remember them correctly they had the engine mounted on the front wheel, and the steering was operated by cable. The arrival of the Mini killed that type of car except for people who wanted to drive them on a motorcycle licence. But then the car had to have no reverse.

Which is why I raised it as well.

I could raze the point of driving whilst using a mobile phone and not therefore looking in the direction of travel, however, I'm sure (and hope) it was all done in a safe manor.

Going back to the thread, I am sure there are bike engined kit cars who have separate reverser boxes after the gearbox, which would allow the car to be driven at full speed in reverse (using all the gears).

Some years ago I met a guy who used to marshall and claimed to hold the reverse gear lap record at Oulton Park in the region of 60mph, in an Austin Champ. If I remember rightly, the engine was about 4 litres!.

Rob.

Does anyone remember the episode of fifth gear when tiff raced a octy vrs & golf gti backwards on the track! :)
