Octavia Scout Diesel vs Petrol?

Featured Replies

Hi, I currently have a 4wd Seat Altea Freetrack with the 2L 170 DPF diesel. It is the most god awful engine I have ever had in a car. I am told by many it is the DPF that does this however my touran which is a 140 DPF is lovely. Nearly every other car I HAVE HAD IN THE LAST few years that has been diesel has been the 140 and I have never hd a complaint. The issue with mine is you have to rev it all the time, if the needle goes below 2K you are pretty much guaranteed to stall. Off the line you need a good 4K (revs) to get it moving and I can't take it anymore.

Anyway I am getting rid but would still like a big 4wd estate. So looking at A4 Avant Quattro or Scout. If I go scout which is my preferredd option, do I go 160 1.8 TSI or 140 DPF? I would prefer petrol but I need Torque for towing a boat and just having a fully laden car.

Advice please?

Thanks.

My Scout is a 140 PD and is easier to drive than your engine which I drive regularly in an A4(B7) quattro Avant. It's only the sub 2000 revs that is the problem as it's not natural to rev a cold car like that just to pull away without looking like a learner. The A4 also prefers to be at 70 to get into 6th gear whereas the Scout is much more flexible. Remarkably enjoyable to drive otherwise and certainly more "planted" than the Scout. Haven't got any experience of the CR engined Scout though.

Please tell me your Freetrack is yellow......

The wife currently has a 140bhp TDi Scout. I was looking at a diesel Freetrack as a second car mainly down to them being so cheap and sharing the same underpinnings as the Scout.

Unfortunately they are just too thirsty in 170bhp diesel guise, especially for my 25,000 annual mileage (not sure about the default brown interior either!)

Shame as I like their looks, rarity and the fact that they are fully loaded as standard.

I always thought that the engine was the same as the vRS so it seems strange that you are unhappy with it?

There was a low mileage 2009 yellow diesel one near me not so long ago for £10K, silly money! The wife wouldn't entertain the colour though :giggle:

You can't beat black though...

I had to go down to Harrogate last Autumn and had it planned to pop in to D M Keith to look at their yellow one - but they went and sold it the week before. Anorak moment: Freetrack has same size tyres as Scout, but don't know if wheel offset is the same.

I really want a Scout in that colour with contrasting mouldings, but whereas Audi and Seat will let you select colours from their complete range, Skoda won't yet. The big mistake I made was not choosing Imola yellow for my allroad, as its on a 1.1% Solutions deal, so I don't have to worry about residuals. Maybe next time - if I dare!

Mine is black and the brown interior is actually really nice and grows. Plus it is not really brown it is more of a plum colour. People are telling me it is a combination of the 170 (which is of course mapped very differently to the 140) the 4wd and the dpf. I have it booked in next week just to be on the safe side.

Having driven the 170 with injectors and loom replaced under warranty its a different beast, with less awkwardness when pulling away. Doesn't feel like it's about to stall nearly as easily, so you don't have to compensate with the revs. I also saw someone on here singing the praises of BG244 from www.powerenhancers.co.uk which might help. Not tried it myself though.
